There has been a lot of talk about the use of Mag vs Non Mag primers in different loads and using different powders.

My biggest question i quess is where does the Win. large pistol for standard or magnum loads fit in. Is it a magnum primer or not or does it fall somewhere in between the two?

Have been using CCI 300's mostly but can buy 3000 of the Win for about 20.00 cheaper than i can the same amount of CCI.

Thanks in advance
Dwight

I did the same thing you're contemplating.
I'm halfway through my first 1000 of them, and can tell no difference in any of my loads.
I mostly shoot 6.5 grains of red dot in my 45LC's and 4 grains of red dot in my 45acp.

if you compare them to cci primers there close to standard primers. If compared to fed mags there closer to mags then to standards but still not quite as hot. Out of all the mag primers they are definately the mildest. FOr the most part i consider them standard primers.

I will see how well they light 18 grains of 2400 when I get home next week.

When was the last time anyone has seen Winchester MAGNUM primers on the retail shelf?

I haven't sence they went to the blue boxes and stopped nickel plating the cups.

The words: For standard or magnum loads, means just that, it's one primer for eather.

At least that's the way I understand it.

I've used about 500 of them to shoot the 45acp. using either 4 gr. of red dot or 4 gr of bulls eye. worked good in both loads no over pressure signs or bad recoil .

WLP lights 20 grs. of 2400 fine.
I'm wondering how they will do with 18 grs. of H110.

I use the Winchester WLP/WLPM primers for all of my handgun loads. These include, powders Universal, Unique, Herco, and Bluedot, but not lately. Also 2400, H110, and the Winchester same, 296 ball. Cartridges are, 38 spcl, 45 acp, .41 mag, 45 Colt.
I have had no problems at all with the slow powders being lit. I believe that Winchester uses their own primer and 296 powder, or equivelant to fuel their magnum ammunition.
I have had, years ago, the opportunity to see first hand what the CCI 300 LP primer did, and didn't do when trying to touch off some .41 magnums with the H110 powder. The bullets fell out the barrel, and the powder right behind them formed in a cylinder. Two projectiles at 2' per second, and the second one was the first frangible bullet in history that looked like the perverbial "soupcan" boolit.
Use the WLP/WLPM primers, they will work just fine with any of the handgun powders in a handgun.

littlejack,
That sounds encouraging.

I've been using them since they came out in everything from 9MM plinkers to full power 44MAG loads. I can't see any difference. Just cast some 310's and loaded them over 20gr of W296 and 17gr of 4227. Haven't gotten out to try them yet. They have worked well for me w/2400 in the 44MAG.
