Step right up and give me your opinion on which of these boolits you would pick as an all around boolit. It will actually be a 99% plinking boolit.

LEE 452-252-SWC or a
LEE 452-255-RF

I am hoping to take possesion soon of a stainless Virginian Dragoon with a 6" barrel.

Both would do fine with the RF perhaps easier to cast.

The Lee 452-255-RF is still one of my favorites for 45 Colt. I have a bunch of 45 Colt molds but always seem to come back to that Lee mold.

The RF is the better of the two. Get a six cavity!

lead-1,
I have the Lee 45-255-RF and it has been a good one for me. I cast these from a 6 cavity mold and can cast up a bunch in a short amount of time. I have never cast or shot the Lee 45-252-SWC, so I can't comment on those.
Good luck, jmsj

I at one time was all hot for the SWC desigh but found that unless you need
well cut holes in a target, the RNFP design to be accurate in more guns
easy to mold and if the flat is the same size just as good on live targets.

If you can ever find an old Lyman 454424 mold get one. It's my personal favorite at 255 gr, depending on alloy. Occasionally they show up on ebay.

For plinking and SASS shooting, I use a 200 gr. RNFP. It's accurate and saves on the amount of lead used. I know it's not one of your choices, but there are other options for this old caliber.

Hope this helps.

I would go with the LEE 452-255-RF in a 6 cavity mold to get you started. There is a ton of reloading information for it as well.

Looks like the 452-255-RF might get the nod but Reloader Fred makes a good point. There is a guy a few miles down the road that may sell me one of his molds, so now I will also wait to see what he has to offer.

Fred, I agree. I got a DC mold and use 7.0 grains of Red Dot---very accurate and one gets 8 extra bullets per pound of lead using it. I used to use the heavier slugs until I discovered this one.

Th Lee RF was the first mold I bought when I got my Colt SAA in 1973. Back then they were .454-255-RF. I sized them .452 and used that bullet in all of my .45's. SAA 1873, M1903 Colt New Service, M1917 Colt New Service, M1917 S&W, M25-5 S&W, 1873 Winchester SRC and my Marlin 1894 Cowboy, and all my Colt Copies of the SAA.

The Semi Wad Cutter one is very accurate. I ordered the RF and the gun shop ordered the wrong one the SWC. At that time Lee was really behind so I did not know when I would get the other mold so I took that one. After I shot the bullets it cast I canceled the other mold though some day I may order one to have it.

Good morning
I personally like the RF as when it strikes a soft skin corn cruncher it gives a nice "Thawp" and critter goes down. I use a 50-50 mix and am rather found of 17 grains 2400.

I have a 6-cav of the 255RF. I like it and use it quite a bit.

The 255 rf works quite well for me. I like how smooth it cycles in the marlin.

The Lee is a very good bullet, and I agree with the others regarding the 6 cavity mold. They are much better quality than Lee's 2 cavity models.

However, I've recently tired and really prefer the design of the RCBS 270-SAA as a best all around 45 colt bullet. Mine grop from MIHEC 4 cavity brass molds.

I totally agree with Groo, the traditional style shoots better than the SWC most of the time. My Ruger dotes on the 454-190 Lyman version of this Boolit.

In my Colt single actions and Anaconda, the Lyman 454190 sized at .454 is best. In my friends (forum member here named sixpointfive) S&W 25-5, the Lyman Keith 452454 (unsized I believe) is tops. My Colts wound not shoot the 452 bullet well. I have to admit for plinking and to save lead I shoot a bunch of the Lee 200 RF bullets unsized in my Colts.
