This is my "new" S&W M29-3. I had one in 4 inch back in the late 70's and got the hankering for another one and decided this time I'd go with the 6 inch model. I'm waiting till it gets here next week so I have plenty of time tomorrow to knock out some 245 gr SWC's for it from my old Lyman 429421. I still have the dies, top punch and size die so, I'm in business and it didn't cost me a thing to get things started. I'm thinking about making some 1:10 bullets for the "coasters"(10 gr of Unique) and I have some 50/50 Linotype that I'll add a bit of lead to for my old favorite of 20 gr of 2400. Been a long time since I've shot one of these canons and I'm a little excited.:)

You will enjoy that model 29. I have an 8 3/8 that I bought new in 1977 and have carried it hunting and have shoot many rounds of the Lyman 429421 bullets thru that gun. My go to load was 23gr H110 with the cast 245 swc. I shot IHMSA with that gun and did well with it. My new 44Mag is a 629 4" that I also enjoy shooting. Your load of 10gr Unique is a good load.

Great sixgun you have there. I've owned two of the dash 3s, both 4 inch barrels. I also share your load, L429421 & 20grs. 2400. Give us a shooting report when you can.

Those are some bad looking boolits you got there, pardner.:) I'm fixin' to do some of those soon myself along with the 429421 style. I see your top punch leaves a little circle on top just like mine does. I kind of like these .44 cal "pile drivers".

I had to do some soul searching when I considered a 44 caliber pistol. I thought of the beautiful Ruger Blackhawk in 44 Special, their SBH and the M29. I can see the44 Special in my future, however.

I'll give a range report when it gets here and I get to the range with some targets posted(provided their good ones).

Well my brother, I used a Star to lube them and a flat 45cal seater die. I found out that the little dings in the face was coming from the bottom of the boolit that was being pushed out when I put one in to be lubed. It ain't no biggy as I also found out that I can take a piece of foam egg carton and pad between the boolits as needed. They should be great shooters. I loaded them with 9gr of Unique and I will see how much more I can go from there.

Let me know how they shoot. I just got back from WalMart looking for a single burner hot plate and of course, they didn't have any and said they hadn't for some time...Walgreen's didn't either. I reckon at least for today I'll just have to preheat with the butane or sit the mold on top of the pot.

Got my 29 when the first Dirty Harry movie was out. Believe I paid $200 plus state tax for it. I get my hot plates at an Aco hardware store, I`ve seen them in KMart also. Yes, that wadcutter is a pretty little puppy.Robert

Used to have a 29 in 8 3/8 bought just before I got married back in 1978 should have kept it.
Now I am lookin for another one.
I had a new 6" 629 and it wouldnt rotate and lock up after 800 rounds of 1000fps lead loads. Go figure
Have a DW 44mag with a 6", 8' and 10" barrels too darn heavy.

First time I checked Walgreens about 3-4 weeks ago there was zero there so, I thought I'd check the old Wally World standby just to find nothing there. It's an omen I tell you, an omen. I'm going to try Walgreens again and CVS-surely one of them will have one unless they're now declared defunct.

My first M29 was the 4 inch model and I can't recall what I paid for it...seems like around $300 but I'm not sure. Whatever they were in the late 70's. My brother had an 8 3/8" nickel one but, I feel about nickel the way Patton did about pearl handle revolvers.:-D

Well, does it?

Makes me want to get out the Dirty Harry box set! I have owned a 29-1, a 27 made in 1956, and a 57. They were wonderful guns............[smilie=6:

Just a heads up about the M29. I picked it up today and it looks as good as the photo of it on the website I bought it from. Looks like I'm in for having to get another size die as I checked the throats and most of them were .432 but I'm not 100% sure since I used a small telescoping gauge to check them with. I have no .432" bullets but I know they'd fall through the throats and the lead ones I have are mostl .430 and they're not exactly snug so my findings may be close. Wish I had some pin gauges to check it with. My unsized bullets from the 4293421 mold are not what you'd call perfectly round from the mold so it's hard to tell using them since they vary from .4295-.432" depending on what band or where else you mike them.

My M 29 takes .432.

Try beagling your mold.

ColColt
05-07-2011, 09:45 PM
Unfortunately Lyman doesn't make a size die larger than .431". A .432" die would be perfect. As for beagling, should the tape be on the half that has the alignment pins and should you put two strips or three with the third being between the halves?

Doby45
05-08-2011, 12:24 PM
Try at first with tape on just one side. Place a piece about 1/4" long on each side of the cavity and that will increase your driving bands. If it isn't enough you can add a layer of tape on the other half of the mold in the same spot as the other side.

ColColt

It seems I saw a pic of where someone put a strip on both sides of the cavity(on one side) and a third piece in the middle between the two. I don't' know if that's necessary or not. The tape I have is .004" thick so I'd say for sure one side may be sufficient.
