At the range today I met a guy that had a scope mounted 'scout' style on dovetails that was underneath the factory sight base,used a pistol scope, worked wonderfully! He said SOME nagants has the dovetails and some dont,anyone here know what ones did & didnt? I want to do this setup too.

Never heard of extra dovetails, Reloader 62. There are companies like SK Scope Mounts which make no-gunsmithing mounts for Mosins and other milsurp rifles. You just remove the rear sight blade. The mount uses the rear sight base and whatever holes are already there. It is a good setup which requires no permanent modifications. I have this setup on a Finn Mosin M39 with a scout scope. It works great.

I got a few MN's too, never seen or heard of a dovetail under site base. sounds like bubbacizing perhaps.

Yes there are dovetails like that on some of them. Had a 91 Finnish capture once with the arshins x'd out and remarked in meters. I drove the sight off the dovetail and found the dovetail base of my Bushnel Phantom 2.5X pistol scope fit perfectly on it. I had a "scout" with a 31" long barrel on it for a while. Was kind of neat and my loading notes show 1.45 - 2.1 moa with hand loads and 2.1 moa with some Finnish VPT44 "D" ammuntion (167 gr ammo at 2619 fps), all at 100 yards.

I have 5 MN's and none have the dovetail I think, the rear base is a complete ring around the barrel,wouldnt come off unless you hacked off the bayonet lug and site, that woulnd be worth it even if there was still a dovetail underneath. Ill be in search of one that doesnt have the 'ring',I guess you can see the dovetails from the back side of the sight base if its there.

I have two 91/30 Mosins, one round and the other a Hex rcvr. both of which are dove tail rear sites. I have one with a 2x7x30 EER Scope mounted on it.

And no its not bubbarized, they can be restored to original condition within a few minutes.

I on the other hand, I've never seen one not dovetailed.
