Looking for a mold for 44 mag in the 240 range with gas check. Will be used primarily in a rifle and for deer hunting which is why the .300 metplat. The bullet must cast at least .432. I have the Lyman 429244 and Lee 310. Both cast under .430. I know RCBS makes the 240 but need the larger bullet so am thinking of the attached mold from Mountain Molds.

It will also be used in a Ruger SRH.

Requesting your feedback as to the design.

I am also going to try to lap the Lyman but need to go almost .003.

lyman has a plainbase similar to the nose you have, maybe not as big 429667.

Did you try Beagling or lapping?

Don't forget Pat Martin has check makers for PB boolits. That allows lots more molds into the same equation.

You might consider the RANCH DOG TLC 432 265 mould. It is a bit heavier than you specify, but is designed for MARLIN rifles...works d*** well in an assortment of 44 revolvers too. It casts some larger because of MARLIN bore dimensions.

I'd be tempted to get some of the RD boolits from some kind soul and try them. A custom mould is nice, but it could turn into an expensive experiment gone wrong. There's a couple of bad ideas covered with cobwebs on the mould shelf in the reloading shack.

I think your design is good. You should probably check your throat on your rifle to make sure the 'band' above the crimp groove is not too tall, thus preventing you from chambering easy in the rifle.

As others have chimed in, if you don't want to do the work yourself to 'discover' what works will in a boolit design, chat up some of the above mould makers.

I tried the beagle thing for the first time on the lee 310 that was casting 429. With tape on both halves the boolits turned out .432 x .433. The sizer should finish them well. For as many as I shoot it was sure worth the little extra trouble.

I used the same tape on the lyman 244 but they turned out .435 x .436. I will try with tape on one side only next time.

Don't know why I didn't try beagling before. I don't shoot that many checked bullets as I have several great plainbase.

Either of the above will work fine on deer in the woodsy area I hunt.

You might also consider ordering a Mihec mold (link) http://www.mp-molds.com/shopping/pgm-more_information.php?id=3&=SID

As you can see from the picture below it casts a .434 boolit and weighs in at 295 grains in the HP configuration.

These molds are extremely fine quality and once properly warmed, throw consistant perfect boolits.

They can be used with a gas check or plain base...your choice.

Good luck with your shooting.
