A place to shoot near Salt Lake

Anyone know of a place on public land where Grandpa can take his gGandson to plink with a 22?
I klnow Utah has lot of public land so there should be a convenient place. Any help would be appreciated.

It's been years since I lived in Northern Utah, but there were plenty of places west of SLC (near Tooele). I used to hunt jack rabbits out there and there was plenty of public land. The way Salt Lake has grown tho, I don't know. It might be all subdivisions now. Look up the number for the BLM and give them a shout. They could tell you for sure.

I used to just drive up into the mountains around Farmington and shoot up there. Also in Farmington up against the side of the mountain is a little shooing range run by the elks club. A small kind of informal range and it doesn't cost much.

for convenience i used to go up to the holliday gun club.
it cost a few bucks to shoot, but it isn't usually crowded except right before the hunting season.
you could also go out past tooele back towards eagle mountain [used to be cedar valley] on the back side of the oquire mtns.
there is also a range in kaysville off highway 89. they have cowboy shoots up there once a month.
or the lee kay center on 21st south, hwy sumthin now, it's run formally by the fish and game.
bout anyplace that was close is now houses,business parks, or private...

I'd recommend the Lee Kay Center as runfiverun said. Take the 4400 W. exit off of SR201 (2100 So), head North for about 1/2 a block and you will see signs. If your grandson has recently completed his Hunter Ed, take his blue card with you and he can shoot for free for the first year after the completion.

Other than that and formal shooting ranges, the entire county is pretty much off limits to shooting anymore. Some people shoot on the west side of Utah Lake, but that is getting pretty hard to find a spot far enough away from housing to make it legal.

There are several indoor shooting ranges around, some more expensive than others.

It's a ways to drive but there is open land towards Scull Valley/Dougway. Turn South off I-80 on Highway 196. Down there a ways there is a small rock outcrop on the West side of the highway. Shoot into that or go a little West of it on dirt roads to a flood plane. If you come to any towns or buildings, you've driven too far.
The Lee Kay Center is off 5600 W.

I've never tried the Holiday Gun Club. I was once told that they are closed to the public now.

Yes , the CPF politicians have made it illegal to shoot anywhere in S.L. CO. that is not a formal range.
You will have to drive to UT. or Toole Co. to shoot informally. It sucks. They have posted no shooting at 4 old ranges I used to shoot at around Provo.:Fire::Fire:

Most of Utah is fiercly independant when it comes to shooting. I can't understand paying $75 in fuel to avoid a range fee but that was the attitude when I lived there.

We went to Impact Guns. It is a gunstore with an indoor range. It cost me $20 for my grandson and I to shoot our 22 pistols and our ammo. They have some nice stuff for rent as well-supressed and full auto--. Lots of great rifles and scopes and other gear if you like black rifles. All in all a great time.
