Very popular mold and bullet design, I have a 4 cav and had a 10 cav. Go for it.

Seems like the #50 moulds are appearing more often on eBay, etc. I bought a four cavity with handles for $50 and shipping several years ago...and love it. I load them in 357 brass for my VAQUEROS...great accuracy.

I recently bought a 4 holer-haven't cast with it yet. You may have an issue with bullet impact with the model 10. I think the sights were regulated for 158 grain lead loads. The lighter 148 grain wadcutter may shoot lower than point of aim.

3.4-3.5 grains of Bullseye would be a good load to try. Try shooting them base first (sprue forward). You may get improved accuracy with it that way. I do with my Lyman 358495 148 grain WC.

If the mold is in good shape then grab it. It is one of the classic molds for good work with the 38 special and has been widely used over the years. It cuts neat clean holes on the target. The best known load for it is 2.7 grains of Bullseye. Its true that it might shoot a bit low, but you can use other loadings that may offset that. Reversing the bullet to base first use and/or seating it a tad deeper may also change the point of impact. I did both for a while to get it to work in my Smith M52 until I latched on to an H&G #251. You'll like the way the mold works and the production rate. LLS

I have had better accuracy from my .38 Specials by running the powder charge a bit heavier for the solid wadcutter as opposed to the hollow base wadcutter.

I run anywhere from 3.2 grs of Bullseye to 3.5 grs of Bullseye for best results out of the Ransom Rest.

Ed Harris has good information about his similar tests. See post #9:

3.1/BE was best for my K38.

The recipe for the Hensley & Gibbs plain base #50 Wadcutter is:

3.5 grains of Bullseye. Tumble lube with Lee Liquid Alox as cast. Load in sorted Wadcutter brass with small pistol primer. Use a Lee Factory Crimp die in the last station/step to remove the flare created to load the projectile. Do not crimp past vertical.

I exclusively use W-W marked Factory Wadcutter brass. I have about 2000 cases in both brass and nickel.

This load will replicate factory hollow base wadcutter factory ammo out to 20 yards.

I am approaching 50,000 rounds of this load fired in a Smith & Wesson Model 27-2 with a 5" barrel.

I get better accuracy from my 4 cavity mould, followed by the 6 cavity, followed by the 10 cavity.

For shooting when it counts (like a match) I exclusively use the 4 cavity.

Here is a 10 yard example of the performance I get from my Hensley & Gibbs 4 cavity Plain base mould. The projectiles drop right at .358":

Texasflyboy, that's excellent shooting except for the three fliers on the left side, exhibiting vertical stringing...Ray
