New to rifle reloading. I am going to load some 30/30 with 8.2 gr Unique, water dropped wheelweights and Lee Liquid Alox. Can I get by without gas checks with this combination? Tahanks for any help, Tom.

You should be able to on a 30-30. It shoots slow enough to work.

Which boolet you planning on using? What rifle and rifling?

tomf52,
How long you had the 30-30 carbine?
I've been thinking of getting a 22 hornet barrel for one of my TC frames.
Then have to get new wood and etc.
Then you mention the 30-30!
Been wanting to get a 30-30 of some kind also.
Sure would like some feed back on you combo.
Likes-dislikes plusses minuses etc etc.
Not worried about cost right now-can't afford anything till I get Santa sprung from debtors prison.
Right now I'm thinking maybe May!
Appreciate any thoughts you want to share about your TC will be appreciated.
Thanks.

FWIW; I found 11 gr of Unique to be an excellent load in my TC Conder with an older 21" barrel using the RCBS 30-150-FN. It runs 1525 fps. That is with the GC though and it weighs 159 gr all lubed and ready to go. I did try the same bullet w/o GC over Bullseye and it did ok at 50 yards until the velocity got over 1000 fps. By ok I mean staying under 2" at 50 yards for a small game load.

On my first and only try, which was last week, 8 gr AP70N (Universal in the US) with 311255 (119 RN PB) went into 1.2" at 55 yards, with a fairly hot barrel and 20-30 seconds between shots. As I understand it Universal is pretty much interchangeable with Unique. Alloy was 3% tin, 5% antimony, air cooled. Lube was 50/50 Alox/Beeswax. I'm planning on trying 9, and perhaps 10 if 9 looks OK, grains next visit to the range, because MV is pretty pathetic at 8 grains (POI is 3.5 inches lower than a target load with a GC bullet).

So, I'd say it depends on your bullet, and you are probably getting up towards the limit for liquid Alox. I've never seen the accuracy with PB bullets that I get with GC, so by my standards the above group was quite encouraging. Incidentally groups were 1.4" with 6 grains (had to wait a while to hear that one hit the target, and POI was 4" below target load) and 1.2" with 7 grains.

My take so far is that my Marlin 30-30 doesn't dislike light PB bullets.

GC design bullets so rarely shoot well without the GC that I have quit trying.
