for my 9 year old son.

He has a very large tumor. The only good news is that it's benign. It's called a juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma. It's so large it's already pressing against his brain. At an undetermined date in the near future we are headed to the children's hospital of Pittsburgh to see "the guy" to remove it. No surgery is without risk, this one in particular. The main danger with this tumor is uncontrolled bleeding. Depending on what they find, the tumor may well be fed directly by the carotid artery, in which case they won't be able to embolize it completely.
He may need multiple surgeries.

I have also sent prayers along that the surgery will be totally successful and they will get all of it and it will cause no more problems for him as he grows. I know when its one of your kids it is especially hard. It will be alright.
Dean,

I will be praying for him. By the way, what's his name?
Make sure that they tell you everything you want to know. It's your right on your son's behalf to be fully informed, but sometimes the medical machine runs right over people. Be firm with the docs because they're working for you. If someone doesn't have time to tell you everything you need to know, they're probably another guy who is every bit as good somewhere else.
Also, everything is negotiable and that includes medical care. Billing people can and do cut deals in advance because it's a choice of getting what your insurance will pay in a network or having you take that money elsewhere, and in this case it's a lot of money.

Prayers from here as well.
Do we need to organize a blood drive for that area to make sure we have plenty on hand?

Best of everything to you and your son. As a retired anesthesiologist, I urge you to choose your anesthesiologist as carefully as you do your surgeon. He/she will be keeping your son alive and stable throughout what may well be a rather extensive surgical procedure and it will be up to him/her to keep up with what can be a rather impressive blood loss and electrolyte shift during the exploration and excision of this type of tumor. Keep in mind that the old 'Captain of the Ship' concept wherein the surgeon virtually ran the Operating Room was discarded years ago and now the anesthesiologist is an equal participant in the patient care team and has full responsibility for management of the patient while under anesthesia. As we used to say - 'A good surgeon deserves good anesthesia - A poor surgeon requires it!'
Trust all turns out well for your boy.

One of the complications for his procedure is the fact that I am susceptible to malignant hyperthermia. Genetics being what they are, as an anesthesiologist you can appreciate how important that tidbit of information is. The only reason I know this is due to the knowledge and foresight of an anesthesiologist 30 years ago.
thank you

Best wishes and prayers for you and your son. I've been in your shoes and the only advice I can give is to stay calm and work your way thru this.
The Ronald McDonald house near the hospital is a resoure you could check out. We have used the houses in two states and they will help you by cutting costs for your family while your son is in the hospital.
I donate to the houses whenever I can.

My wife, Vell and I, are checking into how we may donate blood here and have it credited to you and the blood bank nearest you. Our findings, if positive, will be published on a thread here in order that all Cast Booliters may help out if they so desire.
