Anyone made any green (if you will) bullets by using powder metal at all? I plan on giving it a shot myself, so any advice up front would be great.

My plan is create some .224 bullets using my RCE setup. I do plan on sintering them, but im not 100% sure on the exact temp and time I need to use, but I will be investigating further on that.

Thanks,

Clint

Look at THIS (http://frangibleammo.com/product/2f3d6051-f008-41d0-9843-df9a5c7dd32b.aspx).

Yes that is the type of bullet I plan on making myself. I actually might grab some off that site for reference/comparison - seemed reasonably priced.

Thanks,

Many years ago I took an interest in the, then new, green ammo.

What I didn't know until later on was that the military was "testing" this frangible ammo in South America.

I was told that the frangible round "frags" in soft tissue.

I still have some loaded in both .223 and .308.

Just my $.02 worth.

Clint,

At one time I got some free samples from that site. I think they were .224 42gr or something. Check to see if they still offer samples...

They sent me a free DVD too of the manufacturing process and actual shooting steel targets at something like 2 ft out of a AR-15 to prove that they didn't come back at you but totally disinigrated. Pretty cool.

Do you know what metals they use? I think one company uses tin and copper but it seems that would make a bullet to light for caliber to me?

Corbin will sell you bottles of the powdered metal.

Same junk Barnes puts in the Varmint Grenade line. Pretty sure it was covered in Rediscover Swaging, too.

G'luck!

Powdered metals are much lighter than lead and and compresses a lot more. You need a funnel that sits on the jacket that the column of powdered metal goes into and a punch that goes through the funnel in order to get enough in the jacket.

The problem is the amount of powdered metal you need to put in the jacket is much more than the jacket can hold before it is compressed and you need some thing to contain the powder that is not in jacket before it is compressed. I am sure someone on this site will come up with a way to do without buying expensive the stuff that Corbin sells to do it.

Well I did order the copper powder from Corbin, so hopefully they have it in stock and I get it soon. I will probably make my own funnel, I dont plan on using a jacket, but I think im going to need the funnel anyway.

The pain the neck for me is going to find someone who has a kiln for the sintering process, I dont have one right now.
