Anybody made .22 hornet lighter end bullets 40-45gr? I'm out of cores right now, gotta do another casting session when the rain stops, I'm working with a #6 ogive on my dies but if you don't point form all the way it makes a rather nice large meplat and I can just imagine how that would work with a shorter jacket, I'm not sure how much space of the jacket a 30ish gr core would take up but I could imagine the length of the jacket would throw off the balance point.

I also reload and shoot the 22 Hornet, and have always gotten best groups with 40 grain bullet.

I use BT Sniper dies for my 45 and 44 cal. habit, Corbin -S dies for my 308 and 357, and looking forward to BT's die set for my .257 stuff.

I am just getting set up for swaging in 22 caliber, so am looking to learn. Thinking of cutting down the 22rf jackets to end up with the final 40 gr 224 bullet. Not sure how to go about it yet. Hope to end up with 40gr bullets for the Hornet and the heavier ones for the 22-250.

Here's hoping somebody smarter than I will chime in.

I have made 30gr through 45gr Hornet bullets using 22 short cases instead of the 22 lr cases. I used a 6S ogive as well and made the meplat larger as you suggested. They are very explosive on small animals.

I have made bullets as light as 37 grs in .224 without a problem and without trimming case.

I should have added to the above that the reason I made those 37 gr bullets was to test what I have read about the 3500f/s limit on the 22RF jackets. Bullets loaded to about 3700f/s did not group well. In another thread I have loaded some 55gr home swaged bullets to about 4000f/s in SABOTS with better results so am wondering if it is the rifling cutting the jacket at higher speeds? Those loads shot 2" groups at 100 yds out of a 30-06 same as 180gr. hunting load and in same group? which I would not have expected. They also were very hard on a steel target going though a half inch of cast steel in the form of a auto brake disk.

22 short cases make nice Hornet weight bullets, but are not all that common. Years ago a customer wanted to make Hornet bullets so I made him a set of dies and them made a collet and pilot set for his Forester trimmer so he could trim de-rimmed long rifle cases to the length he wanted.

I used 22 short cases with a 1 cal ojive for hornet. EXPLOSIVE!
