I picked this little goodie up today at an antique store, not sure how old it is, but I recall that Herters goes back aways.

Am I right in guessing it's a mold for jig heads? Looks like you'd hang the hooks in the little bottom tubes, then fill from the funnel end... But no sprue cutter? Just cut them by hand?

Herters closed in the late 70's, got some deals when the Waseca and Glenwood store's were closing, like J 30 caliber bullets for $1.50 per hundred, 22 caliber for $1 per hundred.

They are Herters jig molds. Just go to the Herter's catalog # 79 ( 1969) and on pages 306 & 307 you will find them. Order # is AL4G1. That would be 1/8 oz. 2 is 1/4 oz., 3 is 1/2 oz., and 4 is 1 oz. I knew I saved that old stuff for a reason.

You must be very young as that was a very common item in the 60's. Herters was the place to purchase that sort of item. The other company was Gander Mountain which was my first mail order company to purchase from. I remember going to the plumbers on the job and getting lead pigs so that I could pour my spinner bait jig heads. They also sold the jig that allowed you to bend the piano wire to complete the bait.

Interesting mention of Gander Mountain. A little bit of trivia. Gander Mountain got into financial trouble in the 90s I believe and sold their mail order portion of the business to guess who........ Cabelas. I guess this qualifies as a thread-jack so I better quit.
