I've recently acquired a Uberti 1885 Hi-Wall in .40-65WCF and was wondering if anyone here can tell me which mold/ boolit they have found to work best in this or similar firearms. I want to use the same boolit in this and a lever action (both .400 bore & .408 grooves) so don't want a mold that casts a boolit that is too long.
I'll mainly be shooting cowboy side matches, and hunting with it using black powder.
Thanks for any input!

The Lyman Snover shoots good in most highwalls, but I can't say how it would fit in your lever.

I have/had a Cimerron/Uberti Hi wall in 40-65(rebarreled t0 40-70 SBN). It shot the best, for me with the RCBS 40 cal 300 gr CSA.

I have the Snover mold and it shoots better than I can hold it, but I wanted something that will do double duty as well so I've ordered the RCBS 40 cal 300 gr CSA mold for it.

¡Muchas gracias amigos!

..............That boolit would have been my suggestion also.

I have this Pedersoli RB in 40-65 and it's VERY accurate. If you're not shooting long range, why send more then 300grs downrange? [smilie=l:

I have used a 265gr 41 mag boolit from Cast Performance in my Pedersoli RB. It is a LBT design and very accurate. Don't know how it would feed in a lever gun.

I use the GB 41 mag 273gr SWC in my 40-65. It likes it very well. You might see what Ranch Dog has that might work for both guns.

I own the Seaco #740, the Lyman Snover, A Brooks Creedmore and a Paul Jones Money. The Jones has the front two bands smaller in diameter than the rest, as does the Brooks. The Lyman has to be too far into the case when the bullet is touching the lands but the Saeco is better. Weights in 20:1 are between 410 and 421-grains. The barrel is a Badger 1:16 and the rifles is a C. Sharps Model 74 chmabered in 40-70 SS. So far the Jones is the best (accuracy) for NRA BPCR silhouette.

I'd like to suggest that for the best performance in each rifle that you consider a separate mold for each?

Why? Well, the lever action is unlikely to be used at extended distances and requires a flat-point boolit or round nose boolit to prevent cartridges in the tube from firing during recoil. The OAL is also critical in a lever gun for proper operation.

OTOH, the High Wall is likely to shoot best with a longer and heavier boolit that wouldn't be usable in a lever gun.

I use a Lyman #410678 in my .40-65 Rolling Block and it shoots pretty accurately. It's a 395 grain tapered design that allows me to seat it out quite a ways but it certainly wouldn't work through the tube feed of a lever gun. Maybe in an 1895 Winchester but they're an exception to the rule.

Just a suggestion so take it FWIW.

I shot BPCRS for two years using the HB Dixie version. I had all three of the RCBS moulds; 300/350/400gr. They would all three keep a dozen rounds under 3" at 200M.

If you find a boolit for your lever that cycles and that is heavier than 265 or so grains, please let me know.
