a good set of reloading dies for my 45 colt ??
I have a set of Redding that has ruined the last case of mine
they are literally shaving brass from the case
they get resized to .446-.447 something like that
my chambers on my new Ruger are .479
I sent an e-mail to the company and got some pat ass answer about being so many different colt chambers out there yada ,yada, yada .....
so need some advice on quality dies :violin:

I use the Lee 4 DIE set with no issues. The RCBS set is not bad either. Then there is always Dillons, which are nice.

That is pretty chicken shoot of Redding. Myself and a friend had problems with an RCBS sizing dies. RCBS responded by telling us to send them three expended never resized or reloaded cases and the sizing die. In both cases my friend and I received new sizing dies that worked perfectly. Outside of the postage, there was no cost for either of us. Mine was a 223 and my friend's was a 357.

I tend to use the Hornady New Demission dies. I like the floating seater plug (easy to have Buckshot make you speciasl ones if needed) and their customer service is first rate.

Hornady dies are a personal favorite. I use old steel RCBS dies for .45 Colt.

Your dies are the right dimension. Lee dies size the same as yours. .452-.446 = .006" case neck tension. Why do you want less? The boolit needs to be held tight in the case. On your measurement, the .479 is the size of the each cylinder. Right? .452 + .012+.012 = .476. So you have .0015 on each side of the case for expansion. Right?

my measurement was wrong its more like
.469-.470 somewhere in that area
with .479 chambers @ .470 that leaves .009
and .0045 a side
not the real issue though
the dies are shaving brass during fl sizing and forming sort of a belt
at the rim area
maybe Redding is actually wanting to rename it to 45 colt Magnum
the new belted magnum pistol case from Redding

My favorite pistol dies are Dillons.

Yeah, so is mine. My sized case is .468-.469. But I don't understand the belt. I would send the die back to Redding. I agree Hornady C.S. is first rate. They would just send you another one. [smilie=l:

I would not bother to call redding again except where to send the die. I would send the die and a few examples. as was stated earlier Hornady would just send you a new one and it would be out the same day.

Not me. Redding makes good equipment, as good or better than the others mentioned. If I had their product, I would be holding them accountable to providing the best that product can do. And all that's required here is to put it into a little box and pay for shipping. You'll get it back in a few weeks. It goes to the lab and gets checked by a technician, maybe at a company like Redding. At Lee maybe they send you another defective one.

I had a set of Lee's before I bought these dies

I see now. So you sent back the dies and had a conversation with Redding on the phone. And you got an e-mail from the head honcho. What did he say? I'm just curious.

he said that he wanted the dies back
and it was their fault
when I sent the die to them I explained my measurement error
I also expressed my concern over there being a new rim added
and I included a few samples so they can actually see what it is I am referring to

I wouldn't call Redding again to send the die back now. I would just send it in with a note.
