I have an Enfield 303. I'm looking for a "no gunsmithing req'd." base to put on it, but have no clue where to go. Truthfully, sometimes, I get confused about the model numbers and Mark numbers. I think this one is a Model 1, Mark III, but I'm not sure. Would one of you Enfield gurus take a look at it and tell me exactly what I've got and where I can get a base for it?

Jim,
I believe what you have is a SMLE No. 1 Mark III*. Besides the more obvious differences between the No. 4 and the No. 1, (sights are on the rear bridge on the No. 4, and on the rear of the barrel on the No. 1) you should be able to look on the wristguard, and find the info. Example here:

Sorry, but I don't have the scope mount info that you're looking for. I will be watching this thread to see the answer!

Take care!

B-Square use to make no gunsmithing mounts for a lot of guns, don't know if they made one for an Enfield but might be worth a look.

I think I found it. Take a look at THIS (http://www.combathunting.com/ENFIELD_RIFLE-ENFIELD_RIFLE_SCOPE_MOUNT_FITS_303_No1_Mk3.html)an d tell me if I'm right.

Jim, that one is ok, but it does get loose.
I made mine from 1" angle iron. It attaches with screws on the side. I drilled and tapped my reciever.
There is a site on the net that shows how.
Much simpler and is original in copy.

Thanks, Doc, but drilling and tapping is exactly what I'm trying to avoid.

I have tried every NO GUNSMITH mount for a 303 that I could get ahold of and never found one I really liked but the Weaver side mount is so easy to D and T that you could probably do it yourself. A neater and sturdier mount than the N/G setups.

KCSO,
I'm willing to take a look at it. Can you give me a link to the mount you're referring to?

If you're willing to drill and tap two holes in your receiver, here (http://www.303british.com/id32.html) is the best scope mount that I'm aware of for a Lee Enfield.

S&K makes one, too. Solid steel. Try 'Cheaper than Dirt'.

Jim,
I mounted one to my son-in-law's No. 4 Mk. 1 and it works very well. The only negative is that, unless you use a thread locker (blue) the set screws will probably work loose.

Daddy would have said "You're a good man, McGillicutty!" Thanks for that. I can do that.

Jim I have one that I took off of an Enfield, it's made by B square and uses a no drill and tap mount. If I remember right it uses the ejector screw hole as one of the mounts. If you think that it will fit contact me. It's free. You will have to give me your adress again, all I rember is it's in Floyd. John The toolman.

Brownells has some nice ones. I ordered one a month ago and it has been held up in transit (likely Canada Customs). Brownells shipped the day after I ordered.

If I ever get it I will let you know how it works out. This is one of a few no gunsmithing mounts they had.

Thank you all for your responses. And, Toolman, thank YOU for the mount!

Jim, either the aftermarket synthetic stock with raised comb or a lace on cheek pad sure helps line up the eye with the scope on these guns.

Jim.most of those mounts are for a #4,most people missed that yours is a #1 mk3. The site suggested by Ruger fan may be your best bet. The free offer by Jm toolman maybe the mount you need.

Scope mount bases for the SMLE are an off the shelf item if you can find the shelf! They do require two holes drilled in the reciever ring and two in the clip charger bridge. I have repared and remounted several where the holes were drilled skew. My own one came loose also due to poor fitting. I fixed that with strong epoxy. Epoxy is going to be needed under the base to mate with the un-machined reciever surfaces anyway. A trick I have done on two LE I's (pre SMLE and the No.I designation) was to solder a bridge mount to the sides of the rear reciever walls and a a cup mount over the reciever ring.
