good morning,
in all of the older lyman castbullet data books i have they list HI-VEL powder for use with the lyman 323471(210gr) in 8x57 rifles @30.0 gr=1700fps this is a good start load for my various mod mausers but what would be the 'modern day" equivelent of this powder?.
i have 4895 ,3031 ,2400 ,4064 ,blc-2 ,unique ,varget ,4198 ,rx7.----- or non of the above?.
sorry for not using the search option but it's 6.30 am and i got to go to the "workhouse" for 9hrs,:violin:
p.s ,,, can't wait for my NOE 323471 g/b mold to get here the boolits from swedes molds look fantastic.
have a great wednesday,,,adrians:evil::coffee::twisted:

3031 would be ROUGHLY equivalent. Roughly because 3031 has no nitroglycerin, and Hi-Vel has about 40 percent or more. The 30 grains appears about right to start, but I would start with 35 grains of 4064 first, and see if the accuracy was sufficient. If so, use 4064 because of its larger expansion curve which would be better for older guns. ... felix

Hi-Vel #2 fell somewhere fairly close between RL-7 and IMR 3031 in burn rate. I don't know of a direct replacement, but for reduced loads, I'd be tempted to try 3031 which should be just a wisp slower than your current Hi-Vel.

For reference, there were also Hi Vel #3 and #6 but both of those were discontinued in the 1930s so I am assuming what you have is #2.
