I'm looking for a Win94 or Marlin 336 to rebore for 38-55, so it needs to be 30-30 or 32 Rem. Want at least a 22" barrel but the longest I've seen is 20". Was either model recently made with longer barrels? (I don't want to pay for or screw up an "antique"; and all the modern 38-55s seem to be classed as "collectable" which means MuchBux.)

Winchester made some commemortive rifles with 24 inch barrels and Marlin made or still makes a cowboy model in 38-55 with a 24 inch octagon barrel. Look for one of them they you will not have to pay for a barrel job. I have a Marlin Cowboy in that caliber and it is a great shooting rifle.

I got the Winchester model 94 and it comes in different barrel lenghts. I got the LEGACY in 24" barrel, at the time the other half ordered it for me it had 2 options, Octogon barrel or standard barrel and she got the standard for me back in 99 I believe. But it is a 24" barrel and can drive in tacks at some pretty impressive distances. And that's in 44mag though.

Check at Gunparts dot com. They may have 24" barrels in stock for either gun since 24" has been a standard option off, and on for many years.

Thanks all, but that's been the problem: everything available is either a "collectable" or no longer available. For instance, local shop has a Legendary Frontiersman, no box, clearly much used out in the woods. They want $850 because of its "collector value." And I haven't seen a Marlin Cowboy for sale under a $Grand in several years. But Win 94s & Marlin 336s in 30-30 are a dime-a-dozen, and Jessie Ocumpaugh does a superb re-bore for $250 and will even do it with a sane .376 bore. Going the rebore route, I'd be several hundred bucks cheaper, and have a brand-new bore with my choice of rifling. Thus, my question: do I have any real hope of finding a used 30-30 with 22" or longer barrel? Sounds like not...

I sympathize with the issue, but there are sources for barrels which are not really a economic alternative. Buffalo Arms sells a 26 inch 38-55 Winchester barrel for a 94 in 38-55 for $420 with an octagon configuration. That would be about the best bet but it would require a gunsmith to fit it to an existing 94 action. Were I to really want a 38-55 lever that would be one way to go. Most of the the 38 BP barrels available in blanks are made for singleshots and heavy bullets. I also checked Track of the Wolf and they have a Green Mountain #3 taper 38-55 barrel at 35 inches and about $270 in Winchester profile.

Hogpost... at local countrytown gunshow 6 wk ago we bought a nice (95%) Legendary Frontiersman with added tang sight for $475... someone is "in dreamland" @ $850,well used no box..Hell, I'd sell mine,NIB, for $725 in a N.Y.minute...Or, I have a used,no box, 99% Canadian Comm.94 in 30/30. that goes for $420, but you are in around $700 after Jesse's work to make a nice 38/55.. No knock intended on that,--I have 3 of his 38/55 remades...Onceabull

I feel the same way as most "USED" rifles are pricey + I have a F.F.L.

Onceabull, you wanna sell that LF with tangsight, I'll make it worth your while!
Unfortunately, I'm in San Diego, and Southern California IS "dreamland." Some yuppie fool will eventually lay out $850 for the thing and will never actually fire it, which makes it hard for us real people. I hope it rusts on him!
