Just shot my 38-55 for the first time. It's a new USRAC Trails End Hunter. Round Barrel. 20". Nice small brass bead front sight.

Used W-W factory 255 SP. I like to shoot some jacketed through it to help smooth the barrel before switching to PB.

The intent for this rifle is to add another to my Leadhead Meatgetter collection.

Shot it at 25, 50, and 100 yds. What a shooter. Better than I expected.

25 yds first three shots through gun 1 1/4"

50 yds 3 shots 7/8"

100 yds 3 shots 1 3/4"

The only gripe I have is the trigger pull. No creep just real heavy.

Next time out I'll chrono some loads. I expect the Win factory loads to be about 1200 fps.

Has anyone tried the Lee bullet for the 38-55???

Regards,

BlueSmoke :)

...........I've used the Lee bullet (drops at .379") as cast and TL'd in my old 1893 Marlin. I like 16.0grs of 2400. The rifle likes it too :-). Nice boolit.

Sounds like your Winchester is a good shooting rifle. It sure is nice when that happens, isn't it?

Blue Smoke--

I had almost convinced myself that I had no practical use for one of these 94's re-issued in the traditional calibers, and a post like yours appears. Thanks loads for costing me another four hundred dollars. :-)

Hi BlueSmoke....I have a Lee Mold also but mine casts .381....I'm using 10% linotype which makes them a little fatter.....let us know how the lead bullet shooting goes....I'm still dancing with my $800.00 cdn 336CB in 38-55..but with a .381+ groove dia. barrel and a chamber that will only except .379 bullets I'm getting my toes stepped on quite a bit....Been thinking on chucking up a ratail file in a drill and opening the chamber a little bit!!! what-a-ya think???? it is useless the way it is!!!!.."I hate marlin"....cheery ole mic (sometimes)

Yeah, I already have a 25-35, so that expense has already been absorbed. What it boils down to is this--I already have a 45-70 (Ruger #1) and 9.3 x 62 (CZ-550), so I have rifles that can hurl large and larger chunks of lead already. I've found a cast load for the 9.3 that runs the 270 FNGC/MM design at 1700 FPS with good accuracy, so I sort of already have a 38-55 too. At some point--common sense has to make an entry onstage here.

Remember the words of Barry Goldwater, "Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice." Obviously the pioneer of modern conservatism blessed buying more firearms.

Oh yes, Barry Goldwater! Sure wish he had won back in '64. I voted for him, but not enough others did so we got that other guy.:???:

From memory, 17Gns of 2400 is the traditional MAGB load (make any gun go bang) I haven't tried it for a while, but I have tried it in a lot of rifle sized cartridges with good success. Halleliuah, 2400 is once again available in Australia, I have been scrupously (spelling?) doling out my remaining stocks of 2400. Now that it is available again, I'll have to load up a bunch of elmers for my 44 mags.

Mic;
In one form or another, the Schmitt Rubin straight pull rifle was the service rifle of Switzerland from about 1885 to about 1955, the final model, the K 31, is a beautifully made piece of precision gunsmithing, most being sold in the US are at least NRA very good with some being excellent and almost all have very uniform and sharp barrels.
The 7.5 SR cartridge looks like an improved .308, even though it was designed about 70 years before the .308.
They are pretty heavy and about the only practical scope is a scout type in a scout mount, mine has a 2x pistol scope on it.
I really doubt the Canadian gov. will let you have one, or get the ammo for it, but I could be pleasantly surprised.
They are from $90 up in The US.
