I have the chance to buy a new in the box Mag 20 bottom pour furnace. It's apparently old stock, orange in color and literature in the box has 1988 copywrite date on it. It's new, unused , and with all original pckaging and paperwork. Is $225 a good price? Thanks for any input on this.

I think I paid about $175 for a slightly used one about a year ago. Great furnace.

Just bought a new one for $268 delivered, sounds like a good deal.

I've had my Mag 20 for about 6 months and, if I had it to do over again, I'd lay out the extra money for an RCBS. Overall, it adequately serves the purpose but Lyman's bottom-pour spout has got to be one of the worst designs in history; if it's not dripping, it's only because it's "frozen" up and has to be "thawed" with a propane torch. (Does this all the time if you take too much time between pours.)

Wholesale price for a new one is about $240. I have generally found that used items in good condition go for about wholesale price of new, so that seems to be a decent price.

Call customer service at RCBS. They on occasion, have refurbished Pro Melt pots for about the same price as your older Lyman Mag 20.
I have both... got tired of repairing the Lyman and got an RCBS. The Rcbs developed a couple issues over time, but repair was FREE. Lyman repairs are not cheap. If you only melt a couple pots of alloy per year the Mag 20 might be o-k. If you melt on a regular basis.....
I would suggest that you "pass" on the mag 20 and get the Rcbs Pro Melt.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I have a mag 20. Used it to cast the first 20,000 or so bullets that I did. I now use a Mag caster. The mag 20 is on the shelf but still ready to go. I bought a RCBS pot prior to the Mag caster. It lasted about 6mo. Wouldn't buy another.
