What is the significance of the stars by a thread?

The stars are a rating given by readers. A thread they really like will be given stars by some, most never even use the rating system. A 5 star hotel is a really good hotel, a 5 star thread is supposedly a really good thread.
I just gave this thread 5 stars as an example.

That's odd. I went to "rate this thread" --one star for illustrative purposes-- and when I went to do so, the pull-down menu said I had already rated it 5 stars?
