To start off I am relatively new to casting.

I am currently getting a binding between the sprue plate and the aluminum blocks. It appears to be aluminum building up from wearing on each other.

How do I fix this problem? Is there any way to avoid this?

Clean off the sprue plate and use a little lube to keep it from galling.

What lube is recommended? Bullshop? Beeswax?

I cannot be sure without a personal examination, but it MAY be lead build up. That is common with aluminum moulds when no Sprue plate lube is used.

I use a highly recommend Bullshop Sprue Plate Lube...carefully read the directions and remember, "Less is more"...

I get lead build up when I heat up my lead too hot (> 750 degrees). You might want to lower your lead temp if its very hot.

Either way, it looks like a problem Bullplate will solve nicely, after a good cleanup. Just make sure you keep everything FLAT. My .02. enjoy Mike

Permatex Anti Seize. It's purpose designed to prevent just that problem. Take a fine mill file and draw file off any high spots from the galling, add a bit of Anti Seize with a Q tip and reassemble. Problem solved.

While you are at it, 'better add a setscrew to the side of the mold block to hold the sprueplate screw in place now that it has been taken out. If you reassemlbe without, you'll probably find the scrueplate screw walking out and loosening up during use. No problem as I do it to all my molds.

Look into Leementing in CastPics at the bottom of the page.

+1 on the permatex. I use a copper based antisieze and I've never had a problem.
