I’ve been reading the archives and I’m still in question about what mold to try for my 50 cal TC Black Diamond. I’ve been using 429421 in TC sabots with mediocre success, but the $.10 cost per sabot goes against my fundamental cheapness.

Need to give some ideas out for a Christmas present I’ll enjoy next hunting season.

I’m not sure where to go on the weight and length issue with this 1-28 twist. Looking for 100 yard paper accuracy and 50 yard hunting power.

Modern Target Design Minie (500-354M)
Improved Traditional Design Minie (500-360M)
REAL (50-250- REAL)
REAL (50-320-REAL)

Any experiences with these in the faster twist guns is appreciated.

I would go with the heavier REAL bullet.

The 370 grain TC (Lyman) Maxi Ball so I'm guessing the 350 REAL is most likely candidate.

One can blow the skirts on the regular Minie with lesser charges so it may not be the best candidate.

Look to your .44cal moulds and put them into sabots. You can buy .50cal sabots in bulk from T/C. That's what your rifle is designed for, after all. Try the REALS, too, in both weights, you never know with a barrel. Some shoot lots of different weights well, others don't, you can only find out what you've got by experimenting.

Too much money for them sabots. 10 cents each is like buying jacketed.

I think that I may indeed try both. Much easier to buy two, than to buy all four.

I'd hazard a guess that the longer ones would work with heavy charges and the lighter ones with mild charges. It is the rpm's that count in bullet stabilization. :drinks:

Minnes get a bad rap,but they can shoot darn good.Got to be a close to bore size.About .001-.002 under. No more. Also they have got to be prefect. No flaws in the base and skirt. But throwing sooo many back into the pot is not for everyone.Just got to see what your rifle likes.

I am inordinately fond of the "Improved" Traditional Minnie. I haven't found a 1/48 twist gun it won't shoot in.

I also like the REAL, but given the choice I'll take the Minnie.
