any experience with these bullet as for accuracy....

I've hunted squirrels with them to about 50 yds and plinked with them. My load is anemic so that it matches POI with my normal loads. Accuracy is excellent, but i'm useing the Lyman collar button also.

You could try a RB mould. I haven't tried it yet but been meaning too!

The 0.457" RB is usually a little small to shoot really well, but if you can find an older Lyman 0.465" RB mold, you will have a really good shooter. Anything over 0.460" will work well. Balls that are too large can be sized down so as to have a flat "belt" around them and do very well also. I have used 0.490" RBs this way.

What provisions are usually made for lube, when shooting round ball from a .45-70?

I use a lube ribbon extruder in a loading press to make lube ribbon of whatever lube type is needed. After powder is in a styro wad is placed on the case mouth on that goes the lube ribbon and on that the ball. Then the ball gets pushed in and pushes in the wad.
For the three ball load the lube ribbon goes under each successive ball and the third ball pushes the whole column down.

I shoot gobs of the Rapine (are they still in the mould business?) 460250 which casts a 275 gr .461 bullet. I shoot these in trapdoors and my Siamese Mauser over 8 gr of Bullseye (no wad or filler needed) at 1050 fps. Accuracy is 1" or so for 10 shots at 50 yards (TDs - Mauser is 1"-) and mostly plink at the 200 yard berm with them. However, I have amazed myself and others with their accuracy out to 500 yards. I have used RBs in various configuration and the collar button and they do well out 50 yards or so as mentioned but not very well much farther which is why I went to the Rapine bullet.

According to my old Lyman Handbook of Cast Bullets, there are at least 2 moulds you could use. Unfortunately, they are discontinued. They are collar button type, #457326 and #457130. Might be able to find some on one of the auction sites. I have an original, in the box, Marlin Firearms Co. (successor to Ideal Mfg. Co.) round ball mold made specifically for such shooting. It is marked Ideal Mfg. Co. and is #457129, dropping a 146 gr. ball. Emery

I think that this would be a good GB. A light bullet for plinking, small game ... that would make your WWs go further. I would be in for a light 45/70 bullet GB

I think Larrys Rapine boolit would be a good practice boolit. I have the original drawn up also.

I have shot a lot of round ball loads in a 45-70 for plinking at rnages up to 50 yards but mostly at 20 to 30 yards. I load a 457 RB into an unsized case that was fired in the rifle I am using it in. All I do is punch out the primer and install a new one with a hand tool I own, drop the charge and push a pure lead 457 ball that is coated with lee liquide alox. I use either 5 to 10 gr of red dot or 5 to 15 gr of FFFG. The bullet is pushed all the way down on the powder. I put a black stripe on the case so I know it is a RB load and not an empty case. They shoot into around and inch at 30 yards with open sights and work fine on small game with the heavier loads.

I wonder if this new mould would make a good one? Ineresting bullet. Almost looks like one of those button bullets!

Maybe a GB and could specify 457-458" for use in 45-70 and up rifles. Emery
