I recently acquired my first levergun since my Daisy, and currently have some Lee 250 gn CB loads worked up for it. I also have Lyman 335gn, and RCBS 312gn CB's that I use in my Remington Rolling Block.Has anyone experimented with these bullets in 38-55 with smokeless or black, loaded long for single load, or deep for magazine load.Rifle is a Win 94 Legendary Frontiersman. Thanks, Ringer

..............I can't help you with the long heavy ones, but the Lee 250 gr slug does well over 16.0grs of 2400 + dacron. It'll keep'em in the 10 ring at 50 yards all day long. The velocity is normal for the 38-55 so it's a nice shooter. Easy on you and the rifle.

I have used an LBT 330 gr spitzer and an NEI 300 gr round nose slug in my 38-55s. I also use the standard plain base lyman 248 gr flat point bullet as well. I use the last bullet mostly with smokeless powder in my Original 1894 short rifle and my Marlin Cowboy rifle. My favorite load in 19 gr of AA 5744 with the bullets sized 379. I use the heavy bullets in my Single shot High Wall. I have never used smokeless with them but use 38 gr of FFG GOEX with the 330 gr and 42 gr of the same powder with the 300 gr slug. Both will print into 3 inches of so at 200 yards.

Thanks,Buckshot and Nick SS. Food for thought. Nick, I'll see how the BP loads go in my Rem Roller with rhe 15" twist Badger. I've been loading a little heavier than you. Regards, Ringer

Ringer,

I just posted about this on Moulds.....Maintenance. I use the Saeco 300 & 255 gr tapered boolit and the Lyman 375449 264 gr GC in my Win 94 OFW Commemorative. My barrel slugs .378 @breech & .377@ muzzle. I am sizing .379 for this gun. I have used 17.5- 19 grains/AA5744 and WLP or Fed 210 primer, and Lee factory crimp die used just enough to keep the boolit from moving in the tube. I have pretty much settled on shooting the 17.5 grain load with the 300 or 264(actually drops @270), it is a sweetheart to shoot. the 255 shoots good, but I usually prefer the heavier boolit, if I have a choice.
I tried a magnum primer and saw now difference in accuracy or chrono data.

Have Fun Shooting,
Jon

Wish I could help, but my .375Win/faux.38-55 has only seen one bullet, the old Lyman 250gr RNFP, which needs seating out to work with the .375 brass, and feeds slick as a whistle when crimped in the groove using .38-55 brass....used to go for 1800fps type loads with RL7, but realized a 1200fps load kills deer just a dead at the typical woods ranges we have down here, so it now sees mostly Herco/Unique to make those speeds....

I've been shooting 38-55's competively in CAS long range events for about 6-7 years now, including both lever guns and single shots. I think I'd leave the longer bullets for the single shot and stick with something in the 250-275 gr range. The 38-55 is capacity deficient and trying to load those long bullets to work through a magazine would leave no powder capacity, particularly with BP. Also, it probably doesn't have a fast enough twist barrel to accommodate the longer bullets. Lyman's 375449 is a great one and does well with both smokeless and black powder in both my '94 and Browning Single Shot. With that bullet cast in 20-1 and a gas check, so no wad is needed, 41-2 grs of 2F KIK is very accurate out to 200-225 yards in the '94, and out to 500 with the single shot and 31 grs of 3031. The bullets are hard cast for the latter load. Also, 18grs of IMR 4227 with a 250 gr plain base bullet is very accurate in the single shot, going out to 300 yards with no problem. AA2015 has also done well in the lever guns for me at around 21-26 grs with the gas check bullet. I've tried 5744, 4198, and a couple of other powders, but nothing has done as well as the above for my rifles.

I was talking to my dad (Ringer) tonight, we are wondering if the lyman 66a will give enough elevation at 200 for the 1200fps loads? The loads he shot yesterday from it required about a whole rem holdover at the 200.
Ideas?

I've been using 19 grains of 5744 under a Lyman 375449 plain base bullet in my Model 1894 SRC .38-55 for an average velocity at 9 feet of 1,300 fps.
