Cast results with Rossi 30-06

Lee group buy clone of Lyman 31141, gas checked, felix lube, WQWW with 5% tin added.

Gun is a Rossi combo gun (30-06 and 20 gauge barrels), Hornady brass, Win LR primer. Stubby little thing, barrel is about 18". Got it new in November and tossed the crappy Famous Maker scope it came with and put a Nikon Prostaff 3-9X40 on it.

100 yards this weekend, 45 degrees, overcast, 15 mph wind at my back. Tried several loads. Results are below.

13 gr Red Dot: 2.5"
9 gr of Trail Boss: 2.5"
13 gr of SR 4756: 1.9"
25 gr 5744: 1.3" (best of the day)
30 gr of 4895 w/ dacron: 4.1" (1 flyer; without that 1.5")
20 gr of SR 4759: 4.5". Strange. Usually a top performer. But it was tossing them into 2 groups, 1 up, 1 down, seemed kind of spikey which is odd for that powder.
50 gr WC 872 with dacron. 2.5" Mag primer.
60 gr of WC872 with no filler (full nearly to base of bullet) 6". Mag primer. Stout load, heavy recoil.

No leading with any, but I want to retest 3 of those- the 5744, 4895, and 4756. I think that 1.3" out of an el cheapo Rossi carbine with free cast bullets is pretty darned good, wouldn't you say? :)

Those results are surprising for that inexpensive combo.

I shoot AA5744 and AA2015 in my 30-06s, but haven't tried that boolit. 23-24gr AA5744 seems to be a sweet spot with the 175gr Saeco #301 and 200gr Saeco #301. 29-30gr AA2015 is another sweet spot with both boolits, and these loads work in (2) different 30-06s that I've tried them in.

You might also want to try H322 at 28gr and work up.

I'll bet that little bugger is snappy and LOUD.

thanks for posting the results.I was curious how they did.The 5744 load is a nice one,i have gone as low as 15 with good results.

For most of those loads you can get away with air cooled WW. Give it a try. It might give you some pleasing results and be very usable on game.

That's what I usually do, but since I knew I was going to be pushing some kind of hard I wanted to WQ them.

Unfortunately you can't use cartridge rifles for deer in Ohio, my state, but would do well for deer in Pennsylvania or Kentucky (bordering states) if I ever go over the border. Especially the 4895 or 872 load, still easily minute of deer.
