View Full Version : .32 H&R Reloading Powder Preference

I've read somewhere on this forum (or at least I think I have) that powder burn rate is a
consideration for small caliber loads. I have my choice of #2, #5, or #9 powders and
have the loads from Accurate for these but I was wondering if there is a preference for
a 115gr SWC in .32 H&R?

I've used the #2 with a 311008 boolit and I am getting some leading. Me thinks that
lube (not enough) and the lack of a crimping band might be the culprit but before I go
enthusiastically off loading up a bunch of my SWC I wondered if I am using the 'correct'
powder. I know I can use any of the above, but is there one (based on burn rate) that
should get the nod over the others?

(Please don't suggest other powders as I have enough half empty containers to
start my own business and don't want to get into another powder.)

If I'm not mistaken, the #9 is faster. That's the way I'd go on the small 32s. I shoot 32-20 and 32 magnum in revolvers and contenders. With shorter barrels you get all the push you can in a short distance. Seems to work better. I've noticed that slow loads lead and just cause more heat.

I've been using 2400 and Bullseye. But, like you stated, you don't need to buy powder.

Nice looking firearm! Are those your own casts? What are they? #2 is the fastest, #9 the slowest. #9 and 2400 are very close in burn rate
and, and for all intents and purposes, are almost identical performance wise. In order to get the big push then #2 seems to be the logical choice.

Those are a custom hollowpoint, #311316 from hollowpointmold.com . I use an RCBS 32-098-SWC also. In 32-20, the 98 grain wins for groups but the Lyman 311008 isn't bad either.

You guessed it, I'm heavy into 32 handgun and loving it.

My favorite powder for the 32 mag with heavy boolits in the 115gn range is AA # 5744.

Interesting. That is a slow burning powder, slower than 296 & #9.

Yes Sir maybe so but in my gun it gives outstanding accuracy. I have tried the AA#9 and WW 296 you mention as well as H 110 but the AA 5744 beats them soundly in my Ruger single six.

I have found a good load with Red Dot in a NEF like is pictured above.

That would lead me to working more with the No. 2. If that is your powder choices, I think you can find a load with it.

I've never found the 32 Magnum to be especially powder-sensitive. Using the RCBS 32-98-SWC, every fuel from WW-231 through 2400 has shot at least decently.

BULLSHOP,

I have three of NOE's 32 moulds and all are a little heavier - running mostly 110 - 115 grains.
Would you care to share the charge of 5744? I shoot only Ruger Single Sixes for my 32 Mags.
Do you have any idea what you are doing speed wise?

Thank you
Ward

Well, I went to the range today with loads made up from #2, #5, and #9. I liked the #2 load best.
I was shooting a 115gr Keith SWC out of a SP101 and a S&W 432, both short barreled guns.

The little 32s sure let you do a lot of shooting for not much lead and money, they are just great fun! Glad you're enjoying it.

I like AA#7 for jacketed hunting loads. Win 231 and Herco work well for cast.

AA-7 is a great powder for the redcoats, for certain. It has been quite some time since I fired any jacketed bullets in 32 Magnum, though......probably 10 years. AA-7 is pretty good with #313631 at higher velocities (1200 FPS+) as well.

In my Single Six, I am using H110 for about 1060fps. In my revolver the load is showing no leading and can shoot better than I.
