Well some of you might know i'm making a 700 Huble rifle. it shoots a .700 cal bullet lol. well bullets are hard to find and very expensive, like 90 bucks for 20. so i wanted to cast for them but when pushing 1000gr bullets up to 3000fps i'm wondering if cast will work. so i decided to see if i could find a jacket or some kind of gas check. the search turned up a 1/2" copper pip cap which measure .705 on the out side. thy are perfect for a GC but not so much for a Jacketed bullet as the nose would be as wide as a school buss. so i made a swage last nite to kinda shape them a bit and this is what came out. this first pic is what the cap looks like if its loaded in the case.

this is a pic of the cap after swaging, the cap started as .705 in diameter and .630 long. now its .700 in diameter and .75 long. that is the swage in the picture as well.

and here it is in a case

I did turn some from solid brass which are super cool. the WFN is 1600gr and the pointy one is 1200grs

Neat work.
I can't help but wonder though how you are going to survive firing that beast. A 1000 grain bullet at 3,000 fps just HAS to be Brutal!

Now THAT is my idea of a groundhog cartridge! Very nice work forming the pipe cap and turning the bullets from solid stock.Robert

Its kens (45nut) fault. He kept knocking my "50 Razor Back" build because it was not a "500 A squared" and only put out 5,000 to 7,000ft/lbs not 8,000 ft/lbs. So i had to start a project that would make me look like a man in kens eyes
According to Ed Huble i can get it to do 16,000ft/lbs easy. not that i'm going to be able to handle that but its good to know that it can take out those pesky P-Dogs. I got the action done and i'm waiting for the barrel to shot up.

Are the bases of those bullets open or has the jacket been folded over some?

the base will be open. i will flux and tin the inside and then fill with lead. this will create a bonded bullet.

Very nice JT, looks like you get into making things. You should look at the swage press plans at the top of the page here.

You may need to enlage it just a little

Are there two different cartridges in your pictures? It looks like one has a belted case and the other doesn't.

AWESOME!

Is that a custom head stamp in the top of the bullet or was the base of the copper pipe marked?

I LIKE IT!

Keep us posted.

Does that require a tax stamp from the BATfe boys as a destructive device?

Is that rifle shoulder fired, or does it come with a tripod and T&E mechanism? I'll bet one round from that thing will give you 'gun headache!'

JTknives

It will be shoulder fired, has to be in order to be considered a sporting round

craveman85

if need be ill take the first shoulder fired shot. many both barrel shots with 10 guage 3.5 turkey mags with a steel butplate has prepared my shoulder for this cartridge.

Tell me, is the gun you are firing this from tripod or vehicular mounted? Sliding breech or interupted thread? Or are planning on using it in a Modified, scaled up, Browning M-2 Machine Gun?

Nice.

Just a thought. Take a look at copper welding tips similar to the type used by the auto industry for their welding robots. I`ve seen these tips and they are of a thicker nose and side wall than standard pipe caps.Robert

I just did bunch of searching and narrowed down the search to "Spot welding electrode cap" but still could not find any prices for them. thy look like what i need but cant find a place to buy them.

I just foud this
http://aeg-svs-schweisstechnik.de/pages/prefabricated-parts/spot-welding-electrode-caps/diniso-caps.php
but it looks like the 2 closes sizes are 16mm and 20mm. one is to small and the other to big.

I though so as well until i started looking into it. Not a lot of people know this but you can legally own and shoot 600 and 700 nitro express. thy fall under a sporting round. when the DD law was going to pass a bunch of people stood up and said wait what about our African hunting rifles and big game doubles. So thy made it possible to get exemptions for different rounds by filing the proper paperwork. once done then that round is covered for any one to use. I don't think its common knowledge because i don't think thy want to inform people that thy have trampled out rights but we can get around it.

its known as a "sporting exception". all it requires is a form to be filed and approved by teh BATFE. not a big deal.

If you are looking for the Electrodes to use for Big bore bullets, try NSRW.
The outfit is called New Sothern Resistance Welding, and they have a ton of available Electrodes, plus virgin copper and copper based alloy stock.

Just curious,
What is the rate of twist in the barrel your ordered for the 700?
I think its going to need to be fairly fast.

Cheers, John
PS, great job on the 700
