i want to swage boolits for my 45-70. i dont want to pay for an expensive setup just to smash lead to shape. i was playing with a lee reloader and i had an idea. why not make a hammer type setup and operate it with a 20 ton shop press i have

anyone see any reason this wouldnt work? the plug on the bottom is going to be threaded and it will have a hole on it for removing excess lead. im going to cast my cores then swage them.

They've been making 'hammer-type' swaging dies for decades. I see no reason why yours wouldn't work - but then, what do I know? ;)

The bleed hole should be in the side, it will trim the excess when you eject the bullet.

i had a 2 ton jack at that time, i upgraded to the six ton later after teh 2 ton failed. it did the job, but didnt have enough durability being used at the limit of its power range constatnly and the seals failed.

my press is a 20 ton hydraulic unit so it should be strong enough
