I am just getting into this and am sure that I am doing it wrong.

Ok let me try this again.

First one is when I use the core seating die.

Second one not using the core seating die.

If the lead is cut to 45 grains do I need to use the seating die?

Here are some...65gr boattail, 53gr flat base, 50gr with J4 jacket.

You should always seat the core, that is what "bonds" the core to the inside of the case and bumps the bullet real close to the final base dimension

Seated core should be something like this, but a little deeper, depending on the core weight

Since these were made I've pretty much perfected the process....I think

There are probably a dozen threads on here on how its done but i also have a little write up I did on the subject on my hobby blog, the link is in my signature line, If you need any help feel free to just ask, I've never had a swage session go without learning something due to a mistake. Last night I finally got annealing really perfected but the process I'm using makes the first tumbling of the cases not come out super clean like I want before they get cores and point formed.
