I finally got around to shooting some of my home swaged .224 bullets out of 30-06 with sabots. Note I used a gun I have loaned to my father for quite a while and it is not shooting as well as expected but not real bad.
The bullets were made to 55 grs. with federal rimfire long rifle cases. the target was 100 yards taped to a 9 or 10 inch thick arrow target with a large stump 12 yards behind it. I did not chronograph these velocities are an estimation.
Bullets loaded to about 3200 f/s 4 inch group at about 4000 f/s the bullets shot a 2 inch group right inside other group hunting load which used to shoot 1 inch groups shot a 2 inch group in same group as others. Hunting load is a speer 180gr spitzer over 55gr IMR-4350 all loads hit high and right gun will get some looking over soon.
An odd observation all bullets hit the stump 12 yards behind the target only one 22 bullet tumbled with that exception all hole were in a 1 1/2 inch group? I am not sure why or why those fragile bullets survived the Styrofoam target intact.
