I was wondering what some of you fellas are using for an alloy in your hunting bullets. I am currently using ww+linotype.I think this is to hard and prob. won't expand well. I read somwhere that 3# of ww+1# of lead would be a good mix.Do you think they would shoot well if driven about 1800fps. I would like to hear what you boar busters are using, open to sugestions.thanks.:coffeecom

That, or try straight WW or 50/50.

I would go softer rather than harder. WW cut about 50/50 with lead will heat treat nicely, alloy plenty of velocity, and penetrate just fine. What it will not do is fragment in impact with bone.
I have learned that softer bullets are better for hunting as they hold together. I don't care much about expansion with a 45-70 and a big flat nosed bullet but I insist the bullet hold together.
Almost lost a deer last fall because of bullets that did not stay together and penetration was poor, this in a 45-70. I learned my lesson.
1:1 WW + pure lead- water dropped from the mold.
Add a little tin if you need it for mold fill out.
This alloy runs around 16-18BHN out of my molds and is plenty hard for anything in 45-70.

Nothing harder than 15 bhn is needed for the 45-70. Too hard is worse than too soft!

WW/lead at 50/50 will work very nicely at 1800 fps with a GC'd mould.

I use pure lead with 2% tin added for fill out. Just over 1800fps but I do paper patch. Never had a bullet failure on a game animal yet.

It is kind of like magic, black magic to some. But if you want jacketed performance with cast lead it is the only way to go.
