View Full Version : Need help with a load

I've got a 180 gr 311291 mold for my O3A3.
I've got IMR 4350 (heard this is not a good powder for this), IMR 4831, and IMR 4895.
I think the 4895 is my best bet. Anyone have a any good safe recipes for any of these powders @ around 1800 to 1900 ft per sec? Can't find the other powders in my Lyman cast boolit book I just got on e-bay for this mold.

Start with 28 gr of that 4895 with a 1/2 - 3/4 gr dacron filler over it. Work up 1/2 gr increments to about 32 gr. Your '03A3 will find much happiness in there, probably at 1850 - 1950 fps.

What do you think of the IMR 4831? Any uses for it?

gotta agree with Larry on that one - my 311299 load looks a lot like what he wrote (30gr with 1/2gr poly fill)

Ditto on the 30 grain 4895. I use the IMR powder with complete success. Another load of 27.5 5744 w/ no filler has also been an excellent performer for me. 5744 is just getting a little too expensive for my tastes. The 4895 load has a bit more drop (10.5" vs 9") at 200 yds but accuracy is still as good. The bullets I use those loads with are the Lee 180 and the RD 165. Both shoot to the same POI as the Lee drops light at 170 gr.

Any flavor 4895 wil do. I use all three; IMR, Hodgdon and 2 different lots of milsurp 4895. All works the same just a matter of typical lot to lot variation between them. Caveat; The H4895 is an "Extreme" powder and less heat sensitive. The H4895 also is finer grained and generally throws more accurately in many powder throwers.
