Hi All,

I’m new to swaging but over the years I’ve picked up the following press’. (see Pictures below) I've not been able to find any manuals on SAS or Herter's HEX press'. I

The Herter’s Hex Press is neat but not really good for making .224 from .22 brass - but between the Hollywood or the SAS I know that I can make the Dies to get these to work .. what I can not find is the drawings of the parts that I’m missing on the SAS- floating Punch details? .. could someone please post a drawing of what is missing on this press – Please . From another post the following info was given:
“ The SAS dies were 3/4 diameter with a 5/8 x24 thread The swage, core seat, and point up dies were on this configuraton The punch holders for the base of the dies were fitted into a 7/8x14 die and were held in place by 5/8 x 24 threaded fixture.”

I have in my shop a Bridgeport Mill – 10” Metal Shaper – 10” SouthBend Heavy –So can just about make anything I need for the Press. Can also cast “Cast Iron” or Brass if one needs a casting. (http://www.bowtools.com/beerkeg.htm)

my SAS press is a bit older than yours as it doesn't use threaded dies. It does use the same type of floating punch holder.

I am downloading some pictures of the punch holder and its parts and will upload the images.

it is basically an internal nut with a hole thru it slightly larger than the punch stem. Mine has cross drilled holes to allow a spanner wrench to tighten/loosen the nut.

here is a link to a very old pamphlet by Ted Smith on making dies for the mighty mite II style press like yours. This document was passed to my by another member here, there is a thread titled sas die making under my user name

see if these images help. The punch shown is for a lswc style nose, but you should be able to make it for a flat base punch in the point forming die or for the core seat punch.

let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

It was late last night when I posted the pictures and I forgot to mention the floating punch holder is not 5/8x24 on my holder. It is larger and the threads are coarser. I did not measure them. also on my early press the floating punch die is not 7/8x14 thread either. It is larger and finer thread.

There are several versions of the SAS press and ultimately the corbin mity mite is the same press. If yours is new enough, you may be able to use corbin floating punch holders, they are 7/8x14 and have a 5/8x24 internal punch holder nut. I checked those on my csp-1 press.

Thanks for the Pictures,

There is an Allen Screw at the back of the FLOATING DIE HOLDER - It looks like about and inch for thread for the Allen Screw .. So I think that there should be something between the Allen Screw and the Back of the Punch. When I view the Video on the Corbin Mighty Mite - http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2113017122941015991# it looks he has more parts inside the FLOATING DIE HOLDER . Can you tell me the length and OD of the Punch.

Thanks for your help,
Cheers

Joe,

I will get you some measurement s later this evening. I wonder when you move the set screw would it act as a length stop? Or does it look like here might have been a spring in it?

The newer floating punch holder on the csp 1 has a collar that goes below the head on the punch and then the retainer nut .

I have a few older corbin( 6, 7, 8, 9 and discover and rediscover swaging) and Ted Smith manuals(second edition and some sales literature) that I will look in also so see if we can come up with a picture for you.

Yes .. I think that it is kind of a "Length Stop" .. And that the Allen Screw was out flush with the back tells a tale that there was a Domed pin in there - maybe a spring as well ..
Not sure ..

I looked though all of my books and info and do not see one like yours. The later SAS dies had adjustment screws in the floating punch holder, but they do not look like your picture above.

punch shown in pictures above

cap .311 tall x .495dia
shank where retainer nut sets .422
ID of retainer nut .437

New style floating punch holder
cap .30 tall x .497 dia
shank where retainer net sets .371
ID of retainer net .392

hope that helps out.

Are there any "Exploded Views" that you could send me of the punch holders? In your holder is the Inside Back Flat or Crowned ? Any springs?
Thanks again so much for your help

inside back of holder is flat, so is the top of external punch. No springs and no collar on the old holder.

I will see if I can scan a few pages out of the ted smith book so you can see what is there.

Thanks Manleyjt -with your help I now am Mashing Lead. I did have to give the little Punch Support .. bent the first one in about 10 minutes of use. I put a small dome on the back of the punch - I think that helps the punch self align. Now to build then next set of dies and punchs

Cheers

you are on your way. Did you just drill the bleed holes straight thru? It loks likethey are counter bored?

antoher thing you can do is make the punch only as long as you need it and fit hte punch very close (looks like you have already done that from the pictures).

keep us updated on your progress.

The Bleed Holes are counter bored 3 of them - the inside punch is just inside the bleed hole by about .010" - so the inside punch just cuts and pushes the lead out the hole very quickly. They are 1/16th " ID.
