Cloudy Tikka stock...need help.

Not mine!....makes me cry and I am sure you feel the same...anyways...

This nice Tikka spent 4 months in a water soaked gun case.
Beyond the heavy surface rust (the chamber looks surprisingly good), the stock finish has become cloudy. I am assuming this was from the moisture being next to it. A quick rub of iso alcohol didn't do anything.

I am thinking the mositure has transferred through the (lacquer or oil ?) finish and through the inlet, soaking up in the wood.

Any ideas? (Short of stripping the finish from the stock).

What does Tikka use for a finish?

I was going to try air circulation over time while working on the metal...

I have no idea what Tika uses for a finish. I would suggest that when you have the action out - now I assume - that you go over it with either a very fine steel wool or a fine plastic scrubber and see what you get. If it shines up some it is probably an oil finish and simply needs to tbe rubbed up and a couple of coats added. If it is a plastic (poly) finish it will probably start to peel. That you need to strip - no real other choice.

I am finding that rubbing alcohol and Formby's Furniture Refinsher is not even touching it.

it reminds me of the poly finish Remington uses. I tried once to strip that once and had no luck.

I like your idea of air drying. I would use some forced air (fan) in a low humidity area. ND is probably all low humidity (compared to the gulf coast here). I would give it a week or more and see if there is any change. If it's been underwater for 4 months a week in front of a fan shouldn't do any more harm
