I had read the book several years back, found it to be an interesting read about someone with some unquie skills.

I missed the Gunny by about a year. He left Hawaii in '62 and I went to the Puuloa range in April of '63 for 5 weeks training with the Pearl Harbor Rifle Team.

The video mentioned that he paid his own way to shooting matches. Well, hell, they ALL paid their own way to NON MILITARY matches! And they all competed on a regular basis in whatever match was nearby, using their issued firearms as well as personally owned.

I didn't make the team in '63, and I still don't know if that was a good or bad thing. VN was heating up, and I was young, dumb, and bullet proof. Who knows what I might have done.[smilie=1:

I got out in '65, went on to meet my Wife, and have Children and Grandchildren. I'm satisfied!

But it would have been really nice to meet the Gunny.:-D
