I am a new reloader, and I am going to start off loading 9mm first. Right now I have 115 gr lrn from MBC. I am looking for a powder that is good for newbies and I cannot find much if any load data for the 115gr lrn. I was thinking about getting 231 or bullseye. I will also be loading .40 "once I get the hang of it", I would like a powder that would be good for both, but if not that is fine also.

AA #5 should suit your needs, good load density and easily metered.

I tend to like Power Pistol but Bullseye works good to. http://www.alliantpowder.com/reloaders/recipedetail.aspx?gtypeid=1&weight=115&shellid=23&bulletid=25

I have used 231 but never got as good accuracy as the others http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp

The info for the Power Pistol and Bullseye is max and wont do well with lead boolits. Cut it back by at least 10% maybe even 15%

I started with Unique from advice of others. It is a good choice because it is somewhat bulky and can be used in most any pistol application.

Put 4 - 4.5 gr of Bullseye under that 115 gr bullet and go shooting. My standard pratice load is 4 gr under a 120 gr cast bullet, just loaded several hundred of that exact load on my Dillon SDB. The Bullseye will also work just fine for practice cast bullet loads in the 40 S&W.

Either Bullseye or 231 should work just fine. When I load the 9mm with cast bullets, I used either Unique or AA5. AA5 was desgined for the 9mm round. Any of these powders plus several others will get the job done. There is no single best powder.

I've been using Power Pistol in 9mm lately but I think Unique is a good all round cast friendly powder to start with. I still use more Unique than anything but any of the powders mentioned above are good this is a great time to be a hand loader. There more good powders than ever to choose but the old favorites like Unique still are hard to beat. FB

Go with Bullseye or Unique. there is no load that hasn't been done with them, and then you have a baseline for any other shotgun type powder out there. I use 700x (a shotgun powder) because it is cheap, I have a ton of it (given to me) and it works great in all my handgun loads.

Thats me with Unique. I have a bunch, it was free, and it's a great all around powder. Although I prefer HS-6 in my 9mms and .40s. Mostly because it meters so well.

I went with Bullseye, Bass Pro was pretty picked over, and I didn't want to make the 45min drive to Cabelas.

4.0-4.3 gr
OAL 1.109"
CRIMP 0.377

Loaded up 15 rounds. All chambered my gun just fine (ruger sr9c). Going to go shoot them tomorrow after I get off work.
