Fun times today.

Tomorrow, I'll sight it in well, though it should be very close as-is.

The thing that took the longest was turning the post.

Thought I'd share. Been thinking about maybe making a few a week for sale if there's interest among shooters.

But mostly I wanted to show this off. :D

Turning the post took you the longest time? I find that surprising. How did you turn it? On a lathe? How did you hold it? Did you single point the threads or something like that ?

I would have taken a piece of thread rod, grabbed it in a threaded collet & then just turned the threads off the top area & filed the round point. The hardest part of that is making the threaded collet. Once you have it, you should be able to turn those posts out in no time. That is, unless I missed something & that post is something more complicated than just a turned down piece of thread rod.

That has been a common fix for years. A 6-32 screw, a drill press and and a file for the insert. The rest is easy. Good work. Better shooting. BvT

Try this:

I decided to make myself a couple more posts. This one is what I originally had in mind, and probably closer to what you suggest.

I was having a very hard time getting a macro photo of it. To give you an idea how fine that is, it's made from #4-40 threaded stock. The threads are completely turned off. This was done by hand and I couldn't get the shoulder I really wanted, so I made another that is thicker, and has a taper the length of the unthreaded part, with a flat top.

I did this without the benefit of my reading glasses, and now I feel the eyestrain. Not cool.

The rounded one I originally posted was going to be a bead. I got it done and hated it.

This one draws a finer sight picture than a Mauser! Very cool. Really want to try it out!

It's supposed to storm all day, but maybe I'll get lucky!

The hard part is that it's not automated, and I'm very particular about how I get it, so it's turned on a homemade lathe and cut by jeweler's files I hold in my hand while wearing magnifying equipment.

#6, as mentioned, is too thick for what I want, so I use #4-40 threaded stock. That takes some care.

I like it....just like an AK or SKS setup and allows elevation adjustment (within its limit) so that when shooting cast the rear sight can stay put. Just have to remember to readjust when shooting j-words. I noticed the setscrew to hold the post......did you put a piece of lead shot under it? Saves the thread on the sight.

Hello,

I am using a piece of plastic. Those holes are #4-40 and don't think I have shot around here small enough, though I could use some tin, I think, or maybe find a piece of splatter from the pot...
