What do yall carry?

Leatherman supertool or Core, I am afraid to be without it. For hunting i use a Buck 639 or a Gil Hibben folding Alaskan Skinner.

Gerber Hunter Or a Cold Steel Voyager without serrations. :)
For everyday use I like the Gerber Hunter it is slim to fit in the pocket and holds a decent edge for a commercial made knife.

The Cold Steel Voyager is for rougher jobs of which I also like since it is slim as well.

Sad story here, but true.
I've got two nephews and a niece I don't see much. They are utterly impressed when they do see me I always have a knife, the niece calls it handy.
These kids, I say are 19 through 23, scared of there own shadow, and doubt they could change a tire.
It's a sad, sad day in America when young adults are overly impressed by a simple tool, carried for simple tasks and think it's so special.
By the way, most times I always have a pocket clip lockback. Currently a Browning, but it varies some, has to be light as I have to have dress slacks at work, but always have one.

I've carried and carved with a Uncle Henry #897 UH (I think) for nearly 30 years. That is I have always had at least one in my pocket at all times. I bet I've lost 8-10 over the years. Sad that I wont be able to replace the current one with one of the same quality. The foreign made with the Uncle Henry name are trash.

A Leatherman tool my brother gave me about 15 years ago or a Spyderco (not sure of the model).

The Leatherman tool is so "broke in" that I can flip it around like a butterfly knife. I have a few newer multi-tools but most of them have seen little to no use. Not for any reason other than habit. I had a Gerber that I really liked but broke the pliers and by the time I got a replacement from Gerber I had started carrying the Leatherman.

I gotta admit, the most useful and handy blade that I carry is a one dollar box opener.

Its disposable should you go to a place like House Of Blues that use wands to heck for metalic stuff.

Its also way handy in a shirt pocket.

It ain't an Emerson, but it ain't awful.

Victorinox "Fisherman" that my best friend transferred to me the day he left for the US Naval Academy. Carried every single day since then (I haven't been on a commercial plane in fifteen years, and back then nobody cared). The handles have been glued back on probably a dozen times, the inlays are gone and the impressions where they were are worn completely away, as is fully half of the main blade. It has, however, been used to skin and dress over a dozen deer and perform one emergency tracheotomy. I keep telling myself it's time for a new one, but I don't like change!

I carry daily a Spyderco 50/50 Endura Clipit. Second one (They replaced my first one with a brand new one when the pocket clip broke). I also have Old Timers, Swiss (Wenger and Victorinox), Buck, Kershaw, etc. etc. Each knife has a purpose. I also pack a Gerber Multiplier (have the needle nose and broad nose) on occasion. Everyone has a purpose and is handy to have. I use them as tools, but treat them well and always have them sharp. People usually say "wow that knife is sharp!" after using it. It's supposed to be. It's a knife right? A knife is a knife, a screwdriver is a screwdriver. Don't get the 2 mixed up!

I carry a Camillus 2 blade folder that I was issued about 20 years ago for my armorers tool kit. As with most of our stuff we had extras, and I started carrying it because it held an edge for a long time and the other blade was a flat tip screwdriver. Very handy knife. Cold Steel medium tanto-blade, non-serrated Voyager. Have had it for years, still tight and bright. Been everywhere, mountains of Colorado and New Mexico, streets of Houston. Very light, but strong and comforting. Big enough to be useful, small enough to be legal.
It's the old model (2nd version) Voyager, Japan-made. Those are craftsmen that made that knife. I'd like to meet them.
I don't care for the new model Voyager.

Hi Pepe Ray -

pants pocket - Case XX 2 blade (ten dot from 1970) with red bone handles
truck / back pack - Leatherman and Queen large single blade
hunting - Buck and Mora / Frost

My dad would come back from the grave if I didn't have a knife in my pocket and it wasn't shaving sharp. Anybody want to see the bare spots on my left arm right above the wrist where I have to prove it to the people I work with? There isn't but 5 or 6 people that work here that even carry a pocket knife much less have one that will cut. And I live in central Kentucky in a rural area. Carrying a good, sharp knife is fast becoming a lost tradition.

Ya gotta be kidding me! Of course. I haven't lived in Kentucky for about 45 years, but the first thing my "holler" relatives did was to compare pocket knives when they got together and then get out the "squirrel" rifles. I guess most of the old "briars" have died off. I only have an aunt left in Mt. Sterling. I do have my Dad's Hen & Rooster.

Not only are most of the old "briars" disappearing at an alarming rate, but the rural country store where briars traded for briars are nearly a thing of the past. When I was a kid, it was a big deal to go to one of 3 local gathering spots at night. All the old gents whittling fuzz sticks with there own personal piece of red cedar. Not uncommon to see more good knives in one old country store in one night than what is being carried today in some so-called knife stores in the mall. My favorite part was the squirrel rifles. My dad was the knife man, I was the gun kid. Still, I learned to appreciate a good knife, and my dad made dang sure that I could sharpen one.

By the way, we do still have a few hills and hollers in Green County.

Right now, I carry a Gerber LST Ultralight, but I hope to get a Rainbow Leek sometime. I gave away two of them I bought for myself before I had a chance to carry them.

By the way, the titanium oxide coating on a Rainbow Leek helps the knife open faster and slicker than the plain old stainless steel models, at least for the ones I have seen.

In multitools I favor the original Leatherman PST. For a pocket knife it's either a Swiss Army or an ancient Buck Stockman.

If I need a larger knife I have a Buck 110, a custom D2 bladed hunting knife, and a couple of knives by Ivan Campos.

I've carried many over the years. My first one was an old timer 3 blade pocket which I carried throughout school only because I got a knife pulled on me for a nickle for my milk money in the back of the class!!! Today my boy has quite the knife collection but I tell him never ever forget to take the knife out of your pocket before you go to school you will be in a world of hurt. So last year he takes a can of Axe spray and a lighter to school (he's 13) and gets busted for making a flame thrower!!! When I flew to New York the week before 9/11 I had a big lock blade Schrade in my carry on. The screener stopped me because it picked up on the xray (I plum forgot it was in there) he opened it and held it across a part of the conveyer and said yep it's ok. Four inches and under was ok!!! Today I carry a Kershaw Blackout assisted opening. Damn fine piece of American craftsmanship. It is honed to shave my arm hairs too!!!

Here is my collection of everyday knives. Many of you will laugh but I walk through security scans with out a hitch. The one thing that the war taught me was simplicity beats high tech any day of the week when it comes to dealing with isolated threats.

http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk155/Boerrancher/Lithicarts/KnifeCollection.jpg

From left to right: A 3.5 inch bladed knife worn in a sheath about the neck, when hidden under a shirt it virtually disappears. Next is a 4.5 inch bladed knife that fits nicely in the boot or can be worn on the belt if desired. The third is a nearly 4 inch blade that I most often wear on my belt. Fourth, is a Caddo Culture style knife, that I pack in my back pocket covered by my wallet, and lastly is just a 4 inch blade that I drop in my front pocket, especially if I am going to the airport. No one thinks about an old Indian artifact carried as a good luck charm. It goes in the basket buried under keys, change and pocket lint.

Not shown, simply because I don't have a photo of it and am too lazy to take one is my stone bladed hunting knife that I use for white tail deer. It has a 3.5 inch blade on it. Like all of these knives shown it is razor sharp, the difference being is that I have gutted, skinned, quartered, and de-boned 5 large deer with it and I have yet to sharpen it since it was first made. Try that with a Buck, Greber, CRKT, or any other steal knife.

The disadvantages of them are the blades break easily if you use them to pry, or cut anything that a knife is not suppose to cut. They also break if you try to use them as a screwdriver. All of my children get a stone bladed knife for their first knife. When they learn how to use it with out dulling or breaking it then I give them one made out of steel. It teaches them rather quickly what not to do with a knife. My seven year old has had and used his current stone knife for nearly a year now. The other day I caught him whittling on some wood, and he was doing a dang good job for a 7 year old.

Best wishes from the Boer Ranch,

Joe

Far from laughing Boerrancher, I am impressed with not only the injinuity (pun intended) , but the skill to make such usable knives. Any fool can knock out a bit of an edge on a piece of steel, ( hell, I do that myself) but to make that from a hunk of rock is an acomplished art.

I would like to read about what stone you use and about how you make them.

A very old german folder with bone scales and a blade that takes an absolutely scary sharp edge. If not that knife, then a (chinese!) stockman that takes a good edge and feels right. For hunting, a 2050 Kershaw, or a large single blade schrade old timer folder (US made)

Boerrancher
04-10-2011, 03:31 PM
Thank you both for the compliments Von Gruff and Coopieclan.

All of the blades are made from heat treated Chert from various locations. They are rough flaked with a hammer stone, and then finished up with a whitetail deer antler billet, and antler tine pressure flaker. Once the blades are done they are secured to a bone or antler handle with either pine pitch glue or hide paste glue. Once that is dry, they are wrapped with either raw hide and coated again with hide paste and I final wrapping of leather cordage to protect the rawhide and hide paste.

If the blade was attached with a pine pitch glue, it is wrapped with a natural fiber cordage. When a blade is properly secured with pine pitch glue it really doesn't need a wrapping if it is done properly and the glue was made properly. Many of the ancient knife blades found have no hafting notches on them because they were hafted with pine pitch glue or an asphaltum based adhesive that like pine pitch glue softens when it is heated and hardens to nearly a rock like state.

For the longest time I doubted the effectiveness of stone tools and weapons until I started making them and using them. When used properly I will put a well made stone tool against a steel one any day. Not saying that stone is better in all applications but on non-man made, natural materials it is hard to beat.

Best wishes from the Boer Ranch,

Joe

Those are some nice looking knives you have there Boerrancher.
I never was much for having stuff in my front pockets so I don't carry a knife as often as I should. When I do, I carry a Schrade Stockman like Combat Diver's or a single blade Gerber lock back that I got from the BIL as a wedding gift.

I guess I am the only one that carries a folder with replaceable utility knife blades. I keep a 50 pack of blades in the desk, in the truck, in the tool box, in my drill case. I abuse my knife so much because it is not a knife but a multiuse tool.

I use to carry some good knives, but I abused them so much, I went to the replaceable blade. I will often change out the blade when the second side weears just a little so I generally keep one side unused for when I need a sharp knife.

Forgot to add the Nimravus in the "BOB". Perfect "Do it All" blade I have right now. Looking into a parang style for general chopping for joints and saplings. Any thing larger will be a sturdy ax. ;-)

I carry a lightweight Frost Mora knife while hunting or hiking. I installed a blue jean button just below a pocket corner on my hunting pants and my blue jeans. This sheath has a slotted hole which seems designed for a blue jean button. I just clip on the sheath/knife and head for the woods.

I'm a get-it, wear-it, and forget-it guy. For years my everyday knife was a Russell K87-CW - yes, you read correctly! It came with mammoth ivory scales, but I treated the knife too gingerly with these scales affixed. I had an inexpensive set of black walnut (I believe??) scales made for the knife. I then sealed the scales with several coats of clear acrylic spray. Everything was fine until I became an EMT. The K87-CW is too valuable to risk destroying it on a call-out. So it and its N.I.B. "back-up" (unbelievable as it appears, I am compelled to back up nearly every machine I own) reside in my safe.

I can't wear a fixed bladed knife, so I replaced the K87-CW with one of my many Cold Steel TwistMasterŽ Opinel lookalikes. These are wonderfully functional simple machines with, I believe, the most useful blade shape extant. Nearly abusive use of it altered my thinking. TwistMasters are nearly perfect for 99 percent of knife users, but I felt I might be in the one percentile.

A couple of months ago my TwistMasterŽ joined its N.I.B. "back-ups" in the safe. I bought a left-handed Reeve Umnumzaan knife. And I think we'll stop here. It is the largest, most over-designed and over-built folding knife I've experienced that can be worn in a pocket. I find its clip - surprisingly - unobtrusive when using the knife. And the clip allows me to carry the knife inside my pant behind my left hip, freeing a pocket. Its blade give a first impression of strangeness, but reality is that its blade is nearly as functional as the TwistMaster's medium clip points in my safe.

I was surprised that this machine was essentially as simple with nearly as few parts as my K87-CWs and TwistMasters. One compelling reason favoring theses knives has been K87, nor TwistMaster, nor Umnumzaan has much to wear or "go wrong." And while other frame lock folding knives may be comparable with my Umnumzaan, for me it has a unique advantage. It is [the only frame lock???] designed for use by a leftie.

I've got my compulsion to satisfy. I also have a bunch of excellent machines that I can dispose of.

A basic Swiss Army knife (blade, can opener, saw blade) that my BIL got at the Victorinox "factory store" in Switzerland about 30 years ago. I've carried it so long the cross is worn off the plastic handles. I'm almost afraid to post this because given my record of losing knives I had before this one, I should have lost it long ago.

A Buck Rush with drop point and torsion spring opening, in blue or titanium. Then again a Gerber Junior Magnum or Magnum, or a Spyderco Police stainless like the last poster. The Buck Rush never fails to amaze though, as it flips open much like a switch blade.

Oh, and without fail, each is keep razor sharp, hair shaving sharp; which also blows people away. Thank you Frost cutlery sharpening kit.

Funny thing there, before 911 I was in the Baltimore airport, with a razor sharp Gerber; and this fool of an inspector was handling my knife like a kitchen butter knife; really carelessly. After I told her I wasn't responsible for her slicing her hand open she jumped and quit handling the knife like that. It always gets me as no one expects a pocket knife to be constantly razor sharp. Needless to say I'm always careful cleaning my fingernails.

Well, it depends on the occasion just what and how many... but the original question was "What knives do you carry every day".

For me, I have a Gerber Gatormate in my right pants pocket and a Leatherman Micro in my left pants pocket... every day except when I have to use an airplane then they are in my luggage and get reinstalled when I am out of the airport.

If I am out in the bush or fishing then I usually choose one or more of the following to accompany the other two:

- DH Russel Belt Knife (small)
- DH Russel Boat Knife
- DH Russel Belt knife (large)
- Kershaw Chive
- Gerber Coho
- Big 'ol Browning sheath knife (for archery shoots only)

And at least one of those is usually worn everyday I am out in the bush, camping, hunting, fishing or...?

There others but those get used the most (I like knives).

Every day carry an "Uncle Henry"- 3 blade. For hunting I have several to choose from, depending on my mood.

When my grand daughter was seven I gave her a cheap (but good steel) three blade folder when we went to the cabin. She still has that knife and brings it with her every time we go to the cabin and she is now 27! I later gave her a folding lock blade designed by Ken Onion. About 20 minutes after she got that first knife she came inside holding her finger. When I asked her how bad she had cut herself she said--"not bad but i'll tel you one thing, mommy is not going to be impressed! This last month on our yearly sojourn to the lake she informed me that I will be a great grandpa in Feb. 2012!!!

I have lost every pocket knife I have ever carried in my pocket without a clip on it. They usually last 8-10 months then I loose them. Not the case with this one.

This is the most useful knifle I have ever owned and I even made custom knives for several years. It is essentially a box knife with replacable blades. It was the original knife of this type.

Depends on what I'm doing and where but generally is a Gerber Ripstop and a Leatherman. In the past it was a Buck stockman pattern 3 blade but someone took it. The Gerber, while not the fanciest thing, fits me well and is quick. It went with me to Iraq and twice to Afghanistan. A good friend presented me with a Benchmade 5270SBK Pardue Auto Axis BT2 for retirement but seems almost too nice...would be good for zombie time though ;^)

Carried an old victorinox for many years, it fell somewhere in the engine compartment of my wifes new van right after we got it, we were installing a bug/rock guard and it fell into an inaccessible place under the hood. For Christmas my wife replaced it, she got me a Wenger that is almost exactly the same but I like the grip panels on the new one better. I also got a Jantz pattern 45 in D2, great knife, VERY difficult to sharpen as the steel is so wear resistant but should stay sharp for a long time.

From 1962 until about 1990 I carried an official 1962 Boy Scouts of America pocketknife that I still have. Now I carry an inexpensive but good quality inox stainless steel four blade pocketknife.

Actor Steve McQueen was a neighbor back in the 1970s until he died in 1981, and Judy Ragsdale (who is the widow of his late motorcycle mechanic Grady Ragsdale) showed me McQueen's personal knives that he used. McQueen apparently liked old Boy Scout knives like mine because he had a shoe box full of them.

Now i have begun to carry a 2" fixed blade caping knife by Bitteroot Blades of Florence, Mt, that my uncle gave me for christmas when i am in town as it is a classy little bugger. I'll also use it for hunting, my usual hunting knife is a Buck 110 folder or an identical Schrade. I go through dozens of deer and antelope each year with them, and they work fine on elk too, i prefer them over a Rambo fixed blade. I work at a university and carry a mid size folder made by Junglee "Marshal". I have carried this knife for the last 15 years or so and don't feel comforatble without it. I carried it overseas and it has become a part of me. My co-workers are always amazed that I openly Carry (Pocket clip) a weapon at the university. I have had many discussions about the weapon being between my ears and the knife is a tool. They just don't comprehend! This is the place where we educate people about the world but they don't have the first clue about real life.

Our department put on some training about what to do in case of a shooter on campus and it was amazing to me that they thought it was safe to lock the door and hide in a classroom. It didn't dawn on them that a preschooler can kick through sheetrock and a guy with a gun has an automatic dooropener....

When in Oregon, I generally carry my SOG Tac-II Auto and when I'm hanging out in Washington I carry my SOG Flash II (assisted.)

I always carry my Wenger "gentlemen's companion." It's a convenience I am never without! (It's my constant companion.)

64398Hmm, everyday?
Well, some days I don't have a pocket to carry in (might explain why my tan line looks like a 1911 in a shoulder rig),
but mostly a TL-29 (from about 1965) and a "Mel Pardue" Benchmade (which I bought in a fit of panic when I thought I had lost the TL).

robin jack,
I also carry a Spyderco Endura and have so for 15+ years. Mine is a full serraded blade. Can you confirm if the the new Endura's are full or 1/2 serraded blades or if you have a choice?
Thanks

On top of the photo is my CRKT "Dragon" for special occasions; regular daily carry is my Kershaw 1425.

Both are the sharpest knives I've ever owned; if you've not handled the 1425, be careful, seriously!

i used to carry that knife, have gone through about 10 of them in the last 10 or so years.

i started making my own blades awhile back and now prefer to carry them.
factory's use the most economical heat treat on blades, which does not allow the metal to achieve it's full
potential.
if i did not carry my own i would find another knife maker that properly heat treated there metal to
it's best.

over the years i have had alot of friends give me a hard time about always having a blade, after they realized how often they asked me "hey can i use you're knife quick" they shut up and got there own.
once you have carried a knife for awhile you cannot not carry one.

Smith&Wesson Extreme Ops bought at AutoZone for $12. Hard working, cheap easy to replace if lost or broken, this knife takes a beating on construction jobs, I am a pipefitter and it don't even dull it to deburr stainless pipe after cutting. Hell of a tough blade, unbelievably good value..

Although I currently have a folding Benchmade on my hip for work, I normally keep a "speed safe" Kershaw folder (spring-assisted opener) on my belt for my job as a sporting goods G.M. Normally just get to open boxes, cut rope/wire, open letters (he he) and any other various items to cut like the occasional product tag or crab pot line........ I have LOTS of other knives for in the field (LOTS of salmon/steelhead fishing up here in the NW), but it's different for my job.

My daily carry piece, work, play, at home, where ever I may roam, is a Kershaw Ken Onion Leek. Light, slim, and I've learned how to open it one-handed with my left hand... So I can be holding something, reach down, flip it around, open it, and have 3-1/2 inches of sharp blade ready to go.

Leatherman Skeletool for daily use. One of the best designed simple multi-tools out there. Plus leathermen is spot on in customer service. I broke the plier jaws on my first one (mis-use, my fault, involved a 16 penny nail in a wall stud and a wooden spoon) and I sent it in. The replaced it, no questions asked, within a week.

Browning 725

I have carried this for over 15 years.... I have almost lost it several times. The best story and the saddest is as follows:
I was on a cruise that stopped in Gibraltar a couple of years back. We got out and toured around, and then when we got back onto the ship we had to go through customs. Surre enough, the timid little British inspecto asked if he could see my knife. Ithough he was admiring it and said "Sure!".

He picks it up and when he realized it was a "lock-back" he informed me that in the UK a lock back knife was CONSIDERED AN ASSAULT WEAPON!!!

Multiple thoughts went through my head in rapid succession....
-"No man, an AK-47 is an assult weapon" but I didn't say that
- "You are just pitiful to think that a nice small pocket knife is an assault weapon" but I didn't say that
I looked over and saw my wife and daughters looking at me and afraid that I was going to be stuck while they finished the cruise....so I said "I'm sorry sir, I had no idea and since I always have it in my pocket, I just got off the boat with it this morning. What is the right thing to do?"

He then realized that his security team had let me enter his country with a dangerous assault weapon and he decided that he would hand it back to me with a warning that I could not bring it back.

I am still shocked by this. I really pity them.

In my state, it's kosher for carry when one has a CCW

I've been carrying it for a year and a half, and using it every day, and there is hardly any wear on the finish, and the blade holds a very good edge.

Either my old Army Demolition knife or an old Cub Scout jack knife. They both open cans, bottles, punch holes, tighten loose screws and can actually be used for light cutting chores or cleaning small to medium game. I've used one or the other going on five decades now.

I wonder... How many beer bottles, C-Ration cans or MRE rations does that make?

Well, then you can also pity the citizens of NYC, if you don't already. They are also not allowed to carry a pocket knife with a locking blade.

I have a SOG Twitch II which works well as an EDC. It's assisted, and I find I use the partially serrated edge frequently on my boat for cutting boat lines and fishing line.

Decent size blade, strong all metal construction. If there's a downside, it would be the weight. It's a little heavier than a plastic handled knife it's size would be, but it's not a deal breaker.

I have carried a one or two blade pocket knife since I was about 8. (My mom and dad didn't know, I think...) Generally, that is part of my daily wear. It is a small utility item that fits my pocket, and is usually sharp. I don't carry anything else unless I think there will be a need.

I think I tucked my first pocketknife into my diapers and have been carrying one every day since. Today I'm carrying a Leatherman OHT on the belt and a Victorinox Tinker (I think) in my pocket. I like Benchmade knives a lot as well.

I have a saying I tell my son whenever he forgets to carry a cutting edge (weekends and after school only, yes that sux). I tell him that "a boy without a tool is just a boy". The inference of course is that a boy with a tool is something more than a boy, not quite a man, but getting close. :)
