I have a update to the thread about a Lyman/Ideal 310 muzzel sizer marked 300

http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=109737

After talking to Rick at the 310 shop for about a half hour on Wednsday, I decided I would send it in for him to look at. As luck would have it, while looking through a bucket of random rifle brass.......a piece of 300 Savage brass. I threw it in the Dillon tumbler for a couple hours and then ran it up into the 300 marked die. Low and behold we have a 300 Savage muzzel sizer. I took some photos so everybody could have a look.

Rick had said that sometimes that dies could get mismarked or a "rookie" in the Lyman shop could simply mismark a die out of stupidity. But in this case because the die seems of a higher quality, it is likely a custom order.

After sizing, the inside of the neck measured out at .305

You 300 Savage guys might be able to tell if that is normal specs.

Hopes this post is some what informative.

Since it is a short die as compared to my .308W 310 sizer i wonder if it wasn't intended as a sort of "universal" .30 cal neck sizer and thus simply marked ".300 muzzle"?

I TOOK A FLASH LIGHT AND LOOKED INSIDE THE DIE. THE SHOULDER ANGLE IS VERY SHORT, MUCH LIKE THE 300 SAVAGE CASE. I RAN A 308 CASE INTO IT WITHOUT SUCCESS. I WISH I COULD TALK TO THE MAN(or woman) WHO CUT THE DIE. IT WOULD SURE HELP TO UNDERSTAND THE WHO, WHAT AND WHY.

Beautiful.

I made a wax cast of the inside; the angle is much closer to 25 degree (win mag) than 30 degree (savage); definitely not 20 degree (308)

The sizer neck opening ID is .324", the body opening is .485"; both have the same .339 neck but the savage body is .446-.471 and win mag is .489-.513.

From the specs, the shoulder length of the savage is .1047 and the win mag is .1765; the wax had a length of .1765.

Also, the 300 weatherby isn't too far off, either. The angles on the wax cast are gentle not sharp (hard to tell; might be an effect of the wax cooling), the neck is .336 with .492-.512, yet the shoulder length is ~.220

but with the sizer neck that small, all I can find in the spec charts close is a 7.61 Norma :killingpc

I don't suppose you've any 300 win mag in your brass buckets? Does your "300" have the same dimensions as mine?

And this sizer does seem to be composed/made differently than the other Lyman dies.
