I've got a VERY old can of opened "Dupont improved military rifle powder" red can about 2/3 full. Powder smells OK.
What a good load for lyman 31141GC using straight W/W 170gr about ? I have a old lyman reloading handbook, 46th edition. Starting load 30.0gr-44.0max.
I was thinking about starting at 30.0gr [smilie=1:
What say you !.........As Bill O'Riley would say?:castmine:

Assuming your rifle is in safe working order, I'd start with 29gr. IMR 3031 with #311041/31141.

Considering the 1-10" twist I would start at 26 gr and work up to 30 gr in 1 gr increments and I would also use a 1/2 gr dacron filler. Without the filler I would start at 28/29 gr as suggested.

I just tried some 3031 in a 30.06 today. I started with 33.0 and went up to 35.0. With 33.0 and 34.0 I had a slight hang fire. 35.0 was fine. If you use filler you might get rid of the hang fire.
I was using a 160gr bullet with no filler in a Garand. 33.0 and 34.0 would not lock the slide back, 35.0 did. Got 1" to 2" at 50yds. Not as good as with H4895.
