Well I love my 45 Colt, having 7 different pistols in that caliber. But then I also love my 44 special, having 4 different pistols in that caliber. And I do love that ole 44 magnum, having three different pistols in that caliber. But, then again I am very partial to my 32-20 pistols having 4 pistols in that caliber. Come to think of it, I also very much like my 357 magnum pistols, having 4 of them. Then there is the 327 Federal magnum and the 30 carbine. But I simply can't love them that much as I only have one of each. Then there are the 45 acp pistols, both 1911 and revolvers, 7 different ones. Then there are the two P16 40 caliber Para Ordinance pistols I have had a long love affair with. Not to mention the 357 Sig, the 38 super, 9mm, 10mm, 454 Cas, and 480 Rugers I also enjoy very much.

I would rather not get into the rifles in the above pistol callibers, like the 5 rifles just in 45 Colt. Darned, I think I love them all....:veryconfu

I like 44 pistols loaded in the 900-to1000 FPS range with various 250+ grain boolits...Keith, full wadcutters and RNFP...prefer that I can use them in my 44 Cowboy rifles also.

I shoot 357 in the same flavors...there are a couple of 24 inch Cowboy rifles to side my VAQUEROS and a few dusty SMITH & WESSONS.

45 ACP has a lot going for it. I shot the h*** out of a pair of S&W 645 autos and several S&W 625s back in the late 80 and 90s.

 Depends on which one of my Mihec molds gets here first, 44 300gr HP or the Ruger only 45

The only thing the 44 has over the 45 in my book is that the OM Super was only made in 44. OM 45 Shorty with a rechambered Super cylinder and the grip frame, hammer, and trigger is about the ultimate to me.

The silliest thing like reading and article in Handloader about "X" caliber will be enough to make me forget about what i have been SOOOO interested in the past month, and go, oh ya!!!

In revolvers, it's a draw between 357 and 44 mag. In auto, 40 cal, hands down. I can't limit myself to one favorite caliber. I wouldn't have as many guns that way.

I'm with Whiteagle on this one. I got away from the .44mag for a while but this last year I picked up a Ruger super blackhawk and can't remember why I ever got away from them. But if it was down to just one it would be the .45 colt. I just wish I could find/afford a Ruger super blackhawk hunter in .45 colt

As much as I love my 629 and GP100, the older I get the more I like my M10 in .38 and my 24s/624s in .44 Special. I get frayed enough in the rest of my life to not want to get Magnumized when I want to enjoy my limited range time.

No slam on folks that like the big boomers or autos, I just shoot to relax and don't like picking up brass.

Not much to add to this discussion here. I like 45 acp of the pistol rounds I have fired, and that list is embarrasingly small.

I have fired 40SW, 9mm 10mm, 45acp, 22LR, 22 short. That's all folks. so sad.

Come to think of it. The most fun I've EVER had with a pistol is a Ruger Mark II, so maybe I'll change that to 22LR.

Cavalrymedic: take a break from those auto rounds and add a revolver round to the mix. You'll be glad you did. I wouldn't say that to everyone but by virtue of the fact you are on this site, I'm confident it is a good suggestion.

Used to be the 38, had a few 45ACPs, bog standard 1911A1 guns, didn't suit my big hands and I didn't have enough money to work on them so I never got enthralled by them, then got interested in the 44Mag and Single Action revolvers, then finally bought a Colt Commander (the gun I had always wanted) then my fav was the 45ACP, until the Governmint confiscated it. Then I got into 45 Colts and then wandered into 44/40 territory which I still use a lot, but have bought a pretty short barrelled 45 Convertible so, I'll probably wander back that way. I think my fav is the one I am currently using.

I forgot to add I am pretty fond of the 9mm and 38Super, I prefer the 38Super as it is a bit longer and easier to handle loading, etc.

Oh Ed K, I wish. All I have is one measly Glock 22 and that belongs to the city I work for. I am currently investing in rifles for my collection, but when I do get around to affording some handguns, I think I'll start with a Ruger Blackhawk in 30 carbine.

For the record, I used to own many many more guns, but someone decided to sneak into my house when I was on vacation and steal them. I still have fantasys of meeting that guy and getting my guns back. I'll let him keep the bullets though.

The .45 ACP... and... the .357 magnum... and... the .38 Special... and... heck I like them all, but the .45 really is my favorite.
Easy to reload, low pressure, great with cast, chambered in my favorite pistol (the 1911) and accurate enough to do what I want it to do.
The others... well what's not to like about the .357 and the .38?

Oh yeah, I forgot the .22LR... that's a good one too.

Very tough to name a "favorite". If a caliber stands the test of time--40+ years now--it has some kinda merit. I've cut things back to 35 metallics and 4 shotshell gauges. Yeah, a real belt-tightening there. In fairness, most calibers have only 1-2 examples each--especially the rifles.

Handguns are more likely to multiply in a given chambering, though. 357 Magnum is probably the all-time favorite, with 4 examples on board. I still carry the caliber for felon repellant, mostly in back-country with a rifle or shotgun behind the truck seat. No, not because of The Shaggy Hordes--mostly because every trip out to the desert has the potential (and often the actuality) of becoming a hunting venture. That's how I roll. :) The 357 Mag is a far better hunting caliber than most autopistol rounds, with the side-effect of being pretty good dosage units for the two-legged vermin.

If I'm in more target-rich environments, the 40 S&W or 45 ACP are my usual CCW attire. I am certainly not adverse to autopistols, but since retirement my focus has shifted away from stutterguns to rollerpistols--a 60/40 ratio that reversed itself, more or less.

I shoot more 38 spl than any other cal. I don't like to chase brass but I do enjoy picking up other peoples. Like from those who don't reload and leave it laying or put it in the trash cans.

Besides the accuracy, they are so cheap to shoot. Not a large chunk of lead or much powder is needed. 3.8 gr of powder lasts and last and .......

I'm glad that there are those who like the larger cals though, I like mining at the berm.

But back to the OP, and personal opinion, anything that doesn't sling brass.

I ran a lifetime inventory on various calibers I've owned in my lifetime and in the centerfire handgun dept. it was the .38spl that came out on top, by far, I think it's my love of old Colt D.A. revolvers that put it 1st. place, (.45acp and .44mag are tied for 2nd).

Arguing for 45s as totally essential is like saying anything other that the 1911 grip angle is best. The rest of the world think that theh grip angle on the 1911 is wrong and makes you point too low (no target or precision gunsmade with this angle) the Americans turn their nose up at anything else.

The 45 is a great calibre, I love it and while not able to own autos in it, now own a 45Convertible Blackhawk, but right round the world, massive crime gangs, drug cartels, etc, etc are fought successfully with sub 40 cal weapons. American troops in action are always wanting and using 45ACP, stating poor penetration, etc, etc, etc. The rest of the armies are more fortunate and seem to be meeting not so tough opponents that readily fall before the 9mm. Got to do with entrenched perception I suppose.

Yanks are screaming for 45s, everyone else just gets the job done with the 9mm and either can't figure out what the fuss is about or are totally oblivious to it.

Yessir, get the popcorn made!

Can't speak knowledgably about the balance of the world, but in the USA a lot of the "9mm vs. 45 ACP" heat dissipated when the 40 S&W arrived on scene, at least in LEO circles. To some extent, citizen preferences tend to parallel those of LEOs in the sideiron selection venues. Of course, that can go in both directions. Last year, my old agency approved 1911A1-pattern pistols......after a century of military, citizen, and marksmanship acceptance. Better late than never, I guess. 9mm, 40 S&W, and 45 ACP flavors, too.

It's been a couple decades since I helped out with a "revolver vs. autopistol" debate, or a "9mm vs. 45 ACP" dust-up. I feel 25 all over again! :)

That was the result here when our LE Departments adopted the 40S&W. My mate was is gun dealer and said for a long time, they walked out the door and he couldn't get enough stock. Then the Government confiscated all 40+ calibre pistols (apart from Single Action cowboy guns and Silouette guns. The auto 40&45 all of a sudden became a fond memory. We could be trusted to carry one all day to shoot people if the need arose, but couldn't be trusted to punch holes in paper or clang steel targets on a pistol range.

The 40 S&W was hugely popular before that, but it is back to the 9mm and 38Super now.

I still have 3X45s and 5x44 Single Action guns though.

The .45acp is a real classic, but then again so is the .44. The .357/.38 offers such great versatility, while the .40 will do just about everything that I would ever really need in one package. Then again, everyone should own at least one .22. The .41 mag is a nice flat shooter with some decent authority behind it. Lately, I've been thinking more & more about the 10mm. My wife really likes the 9.

I simply cannot pick one caliber to be my favorite. Like others have mentioned, I go through phases, usually doting on a particular caliber/bullet combo for a few months before wandering onto something else.

Right now I'm on a 45 ACP kick, mostly 230gr RN (RCBS 45-230-RN), but I finally lubed up a bunch of Miha's H&G68 clone last night, so I think I'll fiddle with them next. Not to mention, I really want to use the wonderful brass mold I recently received (I also have his 6 cavity version).

Before this 45 trip, I was fooling around with the 44 Special, in a Lipsey's Flat Top. I had lots of fun with, and I think it'll be time to get back into that soon.

I also purchased a S&W Model 14 that is begging to be shot. And a new S&W 686+ Pro Series.

So many guns to shoot, so little time!

The .38 Special is the pistol caliber I've shot most and reloaded the most of any chambering, but should I get another centerfire wheelgun it would be a .357, since it has all the qualities of the .38 and much more while using most if not all the same components. Only the primer type need be switched to small pistol magnum and then only when full power loads are to be loaded up.

I would not mind having a .45 Colt Peacemaker or any of the classics like the .38-40, .32-20, .38-40, etc. But I have far more hands on experiance with the .38 and enough with the .357 to respect its merits.

I have several autoloaders of the more common chamberings, but never reload for these, so I can only judge those calibers by the qualities of over the counter ammo. Each is suited for differing purposes and the pistols are also suited for those purposes, with little flexibility.

Ain't no point. Everybody knows the .45 is best. It allways knocks 'em down with one shot, usually seperating the body either lengthwise or top from bottom. Then it'll toss both pieces through the nearest plate glass window while reloading itself and combing yer hair, lighting yer cigerette and then pouring you a drink of yer favorite adult beverage.

That reminds me of a scene in a western where one gunman told another that an aquaintance was still mad at him because the second had shot out his right eye. The second gunman said "it was an accident". The first said "how could you have shot out his right eye by accident?", the reply was "because I was aiming at his left eye".

That's a tough one, all right.
I've carried several different models and calibers over the years...After I got my .41 OM Blackhawk, (back then there was no "New Model") I thought I'd found it.
Then...I got my 6" M57, and I haven't looked back. Over 22yrs and even if I've carried others, the .41 M57 is the standout. I usually keep an auto or two around, mostly .45s, but there have been some .38 Supers and .40s. .45s and .44s are fun, but they're just not .41s.
I've got molds for 7 different boolits, just in case she changes her mind, and I've got ingots in 4 different alloys to play to her whims. Don't ask how many powders "just 'cause."
When I want to "show her who's boss", I pull out the M58.
I've found an OMBH, and if I can sneak it into the house... ahhh, well, it's a .41.
Have fun,

Ain't no point. Everybody knows the .45 is best. It allways knocks 'em down with one shot, usually seperating the body either lengthwise or top from bottom. Then it'll toss both pieces through the nearest plate glass window while reloading itself and combing yer hair, lighting yer cigerette and then pouring you a drink of yer favorite adult beverage.

How can you argue with facts?

Cat

LOL! I wish I could get any of my calibers to do all that! :bigsmyl2:

I can't narrow it to only one. Depends on what I'm doing on a given day.
I like mostly the revolver cartridges that aren't magnums & start with a .4,,,,,,,

I thought it would be .45 ACP but since I got my BFR 45-70 I am going to say it a 45-70. It's such a blast.

I am currently having an affair with a new 44 Mag S&W pre29 in my house, but my wife S&W 1917 .45acp doesn't know and I hope she and her H&K three sisters don't find out...

I have to agree that we can't decide on one cal,
because each one has it's good points.
Thats why most of us have more than one
gun or cal.

38's are alwys fun, and 357's are neat, I'm not a big fan of the 44 special, though I own two and want a third, The big boomers are more or less in my past, though I still own a Taurus 44 mag. But these days I am shooting mostly stuff that ends in a "2". 22 LR or 32 ACP, also 32 SW Long.

If I really have to pick one (besides .22) it'd be .38/357. Does that count?

In a "peestol"....... i get a kick out of my LAR Griz in 45 Win Mag......so much fun!

In a revolver......44Special and 45 Colt are neck n neck.

White Eagle -

Howdy !

For me.... .357Mag "N" frames.

As much as I adore those 5" M-27s and 6" M-28s; my carry gun for 20+yr has been a custom 4" heavy barrled M520.

The former ( light barreled ) NYSP gun has a pinned barrel, recessed cylinder,
square butt; and fixed sights.

Dave Schwarze of Ft. Wayne, IN bobbed the hammer, went through the action, installed a smooth combat trigger, turned/put on the heavy barrel; and gave the trigger guard ( right side ) a 1/2 width cut-down..... ala' Bill Jordan practice.

The heavy-barrelled 4" "N" frame matches weight/ balance of the superb 5"
M-27s; but carries and conceals much more easily than the latter.

Regards,
357Mag

I will say that I have always had at least ONE 1911 and ONE 45 Long Colt since getting out of the Army at Christmas time 1971.

At present I have three 1911 pattern 45's. If you count a Para-Ordnance double stack as two, I have four. And five revolvers in 45 LC.

I think Moonie and I are cousins or something, I was about to say the same thing he posted.

I finally found the perfect forever model in both several years ago.

Just for grins and giggles, the 41 Action Express. I actually recut three (was only supposed to be two, but my machine operator got his wires crossed) four cavity Lyman moulds to cast a 165 grain TCBB boolit.

So, casterofboolits....what ever became of the third mold?

This is an impossible question to answer....
if it shoots good
if it is fun to reload,
if it is fun to shoot,
if it has a purpose,
if it fills my need at the moment,
then "it is a favorite".
There are no bad peestols, only challenging ones and at times frustrating ones.

ummm 7 x 9mm
1 x .357

1 x 45 Colt
1 x .40 S&W
1 x 41 Long Colt
1 x .22LR

Carbines

I swing around. A couple of years this is my favroite, next couple years another is. Some keep croping up again and again though. .44 mag/.45LC I classify as just about one and the same with a strong action. I have never seen a steel plate, paper target, or animal know much difference when getting hit. I like them both the same.

.22lr Probably shoot my 41 S&W more than all others. Ruger MKs shot often.
.38 special, what's not to love?
.357 mag, like everything about it other than frequency of muzzle blast..really rattles my head
.41 mag, love everything about it.... a personal favroite. Number 1 IMHO
.500 S&W Lots of fun, shoot it on occasion...have no earthly need for it, great for chupacabra
.50 AE Another .500 smith with less recoil, see above
10mm, 15 rounds of 41 mag.....see above
9mm, I see it as another .38 special with an addition of picking up brass
.45 ACP Great bullseye gun and for SD another personal favroite, I keep going back to it
5.7x28 FN, If I'm not careful it will become a personal favroite, nothing not to like outside of chasing brass

There's others I shoot but these are shot most often. Most of the others are antiquated cartriges and shot as novilty. Picking 5 for me would be difficult.
