Howdy all,

Got two strips of this marked Tuftex with a 4 on the other side. in a batch of lead ingots. What's it worth?

Thanks,

Sam :D

Tuftex is a nickle-copper babbitt metal. There may be an additional stamp underneath to identify the percentage of metals contained.

If it is indeed #4 babbitt, it is mostly tin:

No. 4... 80.5-82.5% sn, 12.0-14.0% sb, 5.0-6.0% cu, 0.35% pb (Max)
Good stuff to have

Well, I just checked, and Tuftex is a lead babbit, more like #4 Hardware babbitt.

Hardware No. 4... 1.0-2.0% sn, 12.3-14.3% sb, 84.2-86.2% pb, 0.20% as

Still Good stuff to have.

eta- Hmm, I guess they don't have strikethrough enabled in this copy of vBulletin.

Found this online:

Tuftex 4-X Babbitt

Tuftex 4-X Babbit is a superior lead alloy used for shackling or re-shackling elevator wire ropes. It is made from the purest lead, antimony and tin available, in the approximate maximum ratio of 88/12/5. It has a melting point of 475 degrees Fahrenheit and a casting (pouring) temperature of 725 to 775 degrees Fahrenheit. It has a tensile strength of 1.8 times regular #4 (hardware) babbitt.

I ask again, What is it worth?

Thanks,

Sam :D

We have to figure out if it is 4-x or 4 babbit before the value (and composition) could be determined.
If you contact http://jacksonwheeler.com/, they will tell you what it is for sure.

You could always put it up for auction in the swapping & sellin section as-is. Just list it as 'some sort of babbit' and release the hounds.

Looks to be close to linotype. That could be your price?
