I was reading an old Frank Marshall article about a 50-70 Rolling Block pistol. He said if someone comes up with a 'bulldog' type revolver chambered in a .50 they would own the market for PD guns. Surely someone has thought of this already? That article is at least 20 yrs. old. But if a guy cut down a .500 S&W case to .44 Sp. length he'd have the cartridge. What frame would make up a five shot Bulldog? Velocities/pressure could be low, it's a .50. Maybe a dead soft SWC? I could see Taurus running with this, call it something exotic and macho, the Punisher? Executioner? Raging Rabbit? Maybe Charter Arms could work it out, they've gotten a lot of mileage on their Bulldog .44.

What we really need is a .55 or .60 Special, I think it was Bunkie Knutson that said "there's no substitute for cubic inches"

S&W has the tooling for a shortened X-frame, and was planning versions in both SS and Ti/Scan.

Then management changed. Here's a long article I wrote. Wouldn't hurt to email tem...

There comes a point of diminishing returns in the caliber vs sheer size equation. The Charter BD is about as big as I can see for a pocket gun. If you went to a 50 (or 55-60) you'd have to add meat to the cylinder at least. These aren't the days of our great grandfathers with trousers that come up to your rib cage and pockets larger than some suitcases. And, in truth, what is a 50 going to really do a 44 or 45 won't? How dead do you want your target? Even with a holster there are limits to whats comfortable and even remotely concealable.

Just a few worthless lines from a natural born cynic.

I have some 500 S&W special brass in my basement. IIRC corbon made the ammo but no one ever made a gun specifically for it. I thought it would make a neat levergun round myself.

Why not the .500 JRH?

Yeah, why not the .500 JRH? Best of both world, really.

I have long dreamed of a 6-shot .500 Special. It would be awesome for just about anything I can think of.

One shot will most likely awaken you from your dream. Just joking.
