A few years ago I bought a Swedish Rolling Block that had been rebarreled by a firm called GECO (Gustav Genschow of Berlin?). There is no caliber marking on the barrel but a 38-55 fits and shoots great altho ~1/16" short. I haven't been able to find much about this firm so was wondering if anyone here can enlighten me? TIA. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v133/mazokid/Fulllength.jpg

Assuming the gun is .38-55 newer brass since around WWII I think is 2.080" for this calibre, and original brass and Starlines long is 2.125". Newer Pedersolis are also chambered to the longer spec like older original guns. .30-30 cases can be made or are made from the same blank, and it is said Winchester didn't want to make two lengths or redraw the .38-55 so they started using shorter ones at that time for .38-55. Someone on here probably has a better history of it than me.

I would start with a chamber cast and go from there.

Hi

Your rifle looks nice, i can in no way say to what caliber it has been alterd to, but it looks like a army (cavalery) carbin and as such it should be chamberd for the 8x58 RD.

If Starline's long 38-55 brass doesn't fit your chamber, you can stretch cases to your desired length.

Thanks for the responses; the gun has been rebarreled and I was mainly interested in history of the GECO firm. I have done a chamber cast, that is how I came to try the 38-55 as I had no clue as to caliber.... 9.3X57R is real close too but is expensive and needs a bit of reworking. That is a great idea about the earlier 38-55 brass being longer, should have thought of that myself! That really makes good sense, I'll have to try that. Thanks again everyone.

You could try searching this site:

http://www.municion.org/

Click "Fuego Central / CF" in the left column, then click ">9 a 10 mm /.39" to get a comprehensive list of cartridges. Clicking any of the cartridges will show all the relevant measurements.
