View Full Version : Wad Cutter
I am in need of a good wad cutter for my 45-70. What type does the best job?
I use milk carton wads and I have been useing retired 45-70 cases with the mouth sharpened. They don't last too long before I have to trim them down and sharpen again. What is the best method of makeing wads?

You did say "best", so... http://www.buffaloarms.com/browse.cfm/2,245.html
But, there are some others that are almost as good... http://www.buffaloarms.com/browse.cfm/2,242.html

Thanks Charlie, I've been looking at those and the press mounted one is the one to get but I can buy alot of wads for that price. I'm more interested in the drill type being it is only a few bucks more that the punch/hammer style. Can anyone comment on the drill type? I also would rather buy American made.

Do-It-Yourself Felt Wad Making (http://thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=411414&)
For the drill mounted version of punches: 6 Piece Hollow Punch Set $10 (http://www.harborfreight.com/6-piece-hollow-punch-set-67030.html)

I have several of the press mounted punches. I can run 1000 in an hour, easily. I have punched card wads as well as LDPE wads that are perfect. I tried using hammer punches - they work but are tiresome and slow to use.
I also have a 12 gauge drill press tool that works very well but is quite messy to use. It works fine with thick wad material 1/4"-1" but won't begin to match the output of the loading press punch with their necessarily thinner wads.
