Does any one shooting a 444 use this powder with cast boolits? I know H-4198, 322, 335, & RL-7 are the most popular in this caliber but I've got a lot of IMR-3031 I'd like to use up. Any load suggeswtions would be most appreciated. (I'm loading .432" Beartooth w/GC).

David, Lyman's "Reloading Handbk., 47th Ed." suggests a starting charge of 50.0gr. with a 240gr. jacketed spire point bullet. Assuming you're using a CB of approximately that weight, you should be conservative and start at ~45gr. and not exceed 55gr. 3031.

3031 is a GREAT powder. Work loads from the lightest to max and you will find one that is very accurate. Don't look for the hottest, only the most accurate.

I neglected to say that the Beartooth bullets I have are 290gr GC. Do you have any IMR 3031 load recommendations for this bullet?

David, In that case, start at 43 gr. 3031 and carefully work up to ~50gr.

Looking in my pet loads book, 47 gr's of 3031 will give you 1924 FPS with a 290 gr boolit. Pressure is listed at 32,900 PSI.
The powder is a little slow and might like a magnum primer but I have found it very accurate even if slow because it is gentler on cast boolits.

I'm going to start reloading later this afternoon. Everyone here has been so very helpful; what a great site!

1. Stay under 325gr
2. ALWAYS use Gas Checks
3. Drive the bullet as fast as safely allowable for good accuracy (slower velocities don't do so well in older Trip4's)
