I only belong to this site, so I was wondering if anyone has loaded SS109 bullets for their .223. I have a Stevens 200 bolt gun 1/9 twist and got some cheap ss109 bullets to try in it. With all thats going on in Japan, I might load some SHTF ammo today. I usually load H4895 under some 52 gr swag-lets (bullets from 22LR cases).
I have a bunch of cast I bought from some members to work on loads for my .223 but haven't got arround to it yet.

They work fine for blasting ammo. They don't shoot better than a couple minutes of accuracy.

I'm using 22gr H4895 with it's little brother (M193 55gr), this operates my AR action and is a nice light load for my tactical competitions. 22gr H4895 would be perfectly safe with the heavier SS109.

I load 18gr H4895 for my 55gr Bator's, I believe the lowest Hodgdon says to go is around 16gr (60% of max)

If your SS109s are 62 - 64 gr bullets and you want to duplicate M855 then try AA2460 powder.

I use LC cases with WSR primers. Work up to 26.5 gr +/- ( under max in Lyman 46th & over max in Lyman 48th? PSI tests under SAAMI with my M43 Oehler in match chamber) for 2950 fps on a 60 -70 degree day. I have an 8 lb jug and that is my standard load with surplus SS109 and US green tip bullets that I've pulled. Most lots of US M855 have 26.9 gr +/- of wcc??? in them. AA2460 is the best ball powder I've tested to duplicate M855 with.

After doing several internet searches I was wondering if anyone here had any updated information on 62gn steel core loads for the 223/556.
I picked up 1,000 projectiles for a good price and have several different powders to use including BLC2, Benchmark, 748,AA2230, and probably one or two others in the powder magazine, but I would have to get more of the others to load the full 1,000.

Thanks, Pipefitter.

Edit: these will be used for plinking in a Colt 20" hbar 1-7" twist.

I went with benchmark, mostly as the math came out. A medium load with surplus SS109, gave me 303 rounds to a lbs, varget or similar couldn't quite get an even number, always a few rounds short of 300. So needed another lbs to get an even number to put away.

They make decent plinking ammo, but not incredibly accurate. But 1-9 works with the 62gr, the military went with the 1-7, not for accuracy, but the 62gr tracer is longer and not stable in the 1-9.

Nearly any powder in the burn rate area of 2230 loaded at 25 +- grains will make good plinking ammo with the 109. I shoot a lot of them in my AR loaded @25.5 gr of Allinat Varmint. 1 1/2 " at 100 yards in my 1-7 16" barrel.
