Took some of my 7/8-14 threaded rod and chucked it in my uncle`s lathe (Mentioned here before). Center drilled it out to .303 and then proceeded to hone out the inside to .314. Took a long time! I was using 50 grit cloth and alternating to fine between size checks. I used an old cleaning rod I slotted to hold the emery cloth and chucked it the drill. It took a good bit of time, but I have one now and won`t have to buy one. Got a pan of RCBS .32-098s cooling in some pan lube right now.

The real reward will be how well it shoots with that size bullet and knowing that the effort was worth it.

...............And there ya go! :-) Did you drill a larger hole from the back for a counterbore? How did you create the tapered leade? Not being negative at all, as HOWEVER you did it, you did it yourself and that's the main thing right there. But in a Lee die the actual width of the portion that actually does the sizing is 0.100" wide at the most.

Yup the Lee dies have a "step" in them. I just honed front to back, back to front. Stayed on the entrance hole a little while longer than the rest of the die body. Feed in real nice and come out .314 every time. The bullets pop out of the top when they push through. Gotta hold my hand over them. The SWCs and the Lee .312 98gr. RN are the best shooting bullets I have fired from this gun. Both sized to .314.POA and POI are the same. Accurate for a 3in. J Frame!

maybe you could punch a hole in the bottom of a plastic butter dish and put it over the top so the bullets would end up in it rather than having to catch them. It they pop out too much you could put the lid on.

Or check in supermarket to find a plastic tub (filled with something good to eat) that would work better

Old Uncle Glen is a fine fella and very willing to accomodate my requests. He is very handy. Builds hotrods and fabs almost all his parts at the shop himself.

Good on you! There's nothing more satisfying than making a custom widget to your own specs, and then have it work out. Heck, the older I get, the more enjoyment I derive from making the stuff to shoot with than actually shooting.

where in the heck do you find 7/8x14 threaded rod?

up here is must be made of unobtainium!

I got mine from Graingers. It was 22 bucks for 3 feet of mild threaded rod.

I tried it Walt. I used a Cool Whip tub. I cut a hole in it right in the center and snap the lid on it and get to work. Works great!

Would you show us pictures of all the parts on and off of your press?
Thanks if you can and thanks anyway if you can't.

Actually I can. We just got a new computer over the weekend and will post some pics of my die and how I set it up.

Sorry for such large pics.... I use a .309 stem to push the bullets through the die and use the little piece of round rod to knock out the last bullet from the die when I am done.

I use pre-threaded u-bolt stock. It is 4140 steel, hardens and polishes reel good. Get it at the truck dealership I work at. For the lead in taper I use a tapered reamer (11*) we use here to open up frame holes.

I know 1 real good reason why lee only has a short sizing area in their push through dies. I figgered it out all by myself. It seems that if you make your own die and have the actual sizing "bore" area too long or the full length of the die you can actually trap and compress air between two boolits and quite forceably "SHOOT" the top boolit out of the die with a loud POP that will make you glad you did not have to pee when it happened.

Yes .357Max you are correct.

i used a 7/8 grade 5 bolt and tried to make a .452 sizer die, but i butcherd it. :( but i don't have a lathe, i was just trying to use a drill press.

I too used a drill press. I put the drill bits in the vise and the threaded stock in the chuck, self centers that way. When it was close to the right size I lapped it from there. It was a royal P.I.M.A and I have not made another with the drillpress however.

LOL so true. That is why I back bore mine leaving the sizing to the bottom half of the die.

Thats a lot of polishing from .303 to .314, I make my push rod long enought to push the bullet all the way through in one push. I made a holder to hold lyman sizing dies also.

I'll give you another good reason why that tapered area at the beginning of the die is so critical.......

I have a die marked "318", but no idea who made it. It would consistantly shave a ring of lead from the boolit and badly disfigure it. I examined it under a magnifying glass and discovered a small ledge at the bottom of the tapered section. Ah Ha! I used a tapered punch with lapping compound to smooth the area out, but it was taking too long so I grabbed my Dremel tool and a conical grinding bit. I just barely touched the area until the ledge was gone, cleaned everything and reinstalled it in my Lachmiller sizer.

I now have the only sizing die in existence that will bump a boolit from .320 to about .440 without even getting in to the die. Looks like a lead toadstool. It seems that I made the taper too long and the boolit simply wedges in place and jams.

No great loss as I can make another, but it shows how "touchy" these things can be!

Gotta say the old .314 die is plugging along nicely fellas. Have done a bunch of .32 cal pistol bullets with it.

A friend of mine, yes - I do have a friend, made push thru sizers the following way. He got 7/8 x 14 Unbrako allen headed bolts that are 3" long. He thru drilled one then did the final size honeing on the opposite end of the allen wrench hole. The other bolt he turned it down to be .001" under size for pushing thru. Lastly he welded the push rod to old shell holders so this assemble can be used on a loading press.Robert
