What is the crimp to nose length on 358429? Or, what is the OAL loaded in a 357 case?

It is too long for most 357 revolvers when crimped in the crimp groove. This is because Elmer Keith designed it for use in 38 Special cases in the 38/44 revolver. Lyman recommends crimping over the front of the driving band.

Well hang on. Before we get into how 'it can't be done' let's be a bit more precise.

It was designed for the .38, but there are a number of .357s you can still crimp into the crimp groove. My Group Buy mould will fit the following: S&W 66/686, Ruger Blackhawk, these I've tried personally. It won't fit a Python.

Remember, moulds do vary. My GB moulds are right about .360 from the end of the case to the end of the meplat.

I'm looking at potential fit in several applications and recalled the design for 38 cases and Elmer's cylinder length. That's why I asked for bullet dimensions.

Thanks Catshooter and Boogerred for the details. Now to check cylinder lengths, mock up some dummys for lever feeding, etc.

Beeman, I have the Lyman #358429 and know what Lyman says about its use in .357mag. revolvers. However, as pointed out earlier, revolver cylinders vary considerably in length, thus affecting the O.A.L. of a loaded round. E.g., in my Ruger SBH, I can crimp normally, i.e., in the crimp groove. Since the cylinder of my Dan Wesson is shorter, I can either do as Lyman recommends or taper crimp. I opt for the latter, using either 1.58" or 1.59" OAL and have had no problems with bullet movement or accuracy because of taper crimping.

I do the same as Maven and use a light taper crimp loading the round so it's about .015 short of the end of the cyl on my gp100. The bullet never moves under recoil, there is a lot of case holding on to a lot of boolit. Nick

Catshooters GB Keith bullet crimped in the crimp grove and loaded in 357 brass will fit in my S&W model 19 and 586. It just barely does not fit in my model 27 (1970s). As a side note six of these loaded in mag brass over 13.6 gr of Alliant 2400 with CCI 500 primars averaged 1283 fps over my crono. This was from a six inch 586. This same load, but the case lightly crimped over the front drive band averaged 1465 fps!!! This last load was to HOT. Flattened primars and stiff extraction from my gun.

I can crimp in the crimp groove of a 358429 for my S&W 19 and for my Colt SAA but it will not feed in a Marlin 94. I now crimp half way up on forward band. Maximum from crimping groove to front of bullet is .300 to stay at maximum AOL.
