I only have three marlin 95s so there may be someone with different ideas out there. I like to shoot bullets in the 300 to 400 gr range in mine and I have found that all of mine like slugs sized to .459". One of my favorite bullets for the Marlin is the RCBS 45-325-FN This bullet with the alloy I use comes out at 335 gr and works well in all my rifles. I also like the Lyman 457193 which is a flat point 405 gr bullet but it too weighs in more with the alloy I use at 420 gr. These two bullets are the main ones I use. I mostly shoot both with Accurate Arms 5744 powder at 27 gr. This is a mild black powder duplication load. When I go elk hunting I use the 420 gr bullet as push it with 42 gr of 3031. This is not a hot load but will shoot through Elk just fine either side to side or diagonally through the body. You can load up both of these bullets hotter to the point of real pain to shoot them but I do not like to punish myself when I am out trying to have fun.

I have found the Marlin 45-70 levergun to be an excellent shooter with cast bullets. The RCBS 405 GC bullet was designed for the Marlin leverguns.

Cast this bullet from ACWW or No. 2. Measure the bullet and either buy or have made a sizing die that is about .001 over. Just use it to seat/crimp gas checks and lube the bullets.

Use a good lube and not Lee snot.

Load over 2400, 4227, 4759 or 5744 to give about 1.4K fps maybe 1.5 K. No need to worry about fillers. YOu need nothing stronger to kill anything in North American with ease.

Enjoy your rifle and shooting.

thats kinda my idea too is i just want to shoot for fun and i have shot some loads in it that after four or five rounds i was ready to quit . a full load has to be harder even on the best guns tho dont you think?

My Marlin lives on a 420 gr plain base over 24 gr of 2400. It will put 5 into 1.5 inches off the bench and is mild enough in recoil that I can easily shoot 50 or more in an oiling.
I have actually had more trouble finding a bad load for mine than a good one.

What Chargar said is right, a 405 to 420 grain flat nose at 1400 or so will shoot thru anything you need to shoot thru.

ha, if you think jacketed bullets cost, look around you. You just walked into the biggest nest of the brokest bunch of addicts I've ever had the misfortune to fall in with. Welcome to the site. Dennis
